The Western Australia region
Perth is a city where brilliant sunshine, sparkling waterways and a sophisticated yet laidback outdoor lifestyle create a city that's always in a holiday mood. Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia and the fourth most populous city in Australia. The Perth metropolitan area has an estimated population of 1,659,000.
The metropolitan area is located in the South West Division of Western Australia, between the Indian Ocean and a low coastal escarpment known as the Darling Range. The central business district and suburbs of Perth are situated on the banks of the Swan River.
Shortly after the establishment of the port settlement of Fremantle, Perth was founded on 12 June 1829 by Captain James Stirling as the political centre of the free-settler Swan River Colony. As the business and administration centre for the resource rich state, Perth has grown consistently faster than the national average.
WHAT TO SEE & DO IN FREMANTLE
FREMANTLE FESTIVALS: (1) Fremantle holds several festivals throughout the year. A few of the larger festivals are listed below:- (2) The Sardine Festival held in January, where you can taste the culinary delights of the many local cultures. (3) The Fremantle Festival, full of art & culture held in November, when the streets come to life with colour and activities for weeks. (4) In October, at the start of the new fishing season, Fremantle holds a festival called "The Blessing of the Fleet", to bring good fortune to the fishing harbour and its many fishermen. Part of the ceremony involves the blessing of the boats after a street procession from St Patrick's Church to the Fishing Boat Harbour. The procession itself is led by a statute of Our Lady who protects the local fisherman. THE ARTS: Along with the diverse culture of Fremantle come the many galleries that feature contemporary arts and crafts.
