About the home

Old Abbey Road is a bright and sunny traditional cottage. It is situated opposite the entrance to the Old Cistercian Nunnery and within easy walking distance of the centre of North Berwick, the West Bay beach and the railway station. There are frequent trains to Edinburgh and other towns and villages in East Lothian with a wide variety of sporting and cultural events within easy reach.

The cottage is furnished in a contemporary fashion with the ground floor having a living room, dining room, kitchen and a beautiful conservatory, providing ample space and comfort for a range of activities. The living room has a traditional fireplace with a gas fire, giving a cosy atmosphere perfect for playing games after a long day on the beach. The dining room can seat 10 people making it ideal for entertaining friends and family.

Upstairs there are 3 bedrooms, the master bedroom, which is often bathed in morning sunshine, has an antique pine 4-poster bed. Bedroom 2 has a set of bunk beds, a comfortable sofa and a large chest of drawers. Bedroom 3 is a child’s bedroom also accommodating a set of bunk beds.

There is a small secure garden and patio to the rear of the house providing access to a large shed with a sink and laundry facilities, the shed provides ideal secure storage for sports equipment.

The Edinburgh / Lothians / East Lothian region

North Berwick is located on the coast of East Lothian to the east of Edinburgh.

The Scottish Seabird Centre ( www.seabird.org )
This is a unique visitor attraction just a short walk from the house. Learn about the sea birds that live along the coast, and zoom in on some of Bass Rock’s gannets and Fidra’s puffins through remote controlled cameras that you can control from the centre. You can even sometimes, see seals. It is great fun and very child friendly.

The North Berwick area

Castles
Tantallon and Dirleton castles are two of the most impressive castle ruins in Scotland, each with a very different character. Tantallon is perched dramatically on the cliff top with spectacular views out to Bass Rock, whilst Dirleton is set in a pretty conservation village. It has beautiful gardens, with the longest herbaceous border in the country.

Beaches
There are two beaches in North Berwick to the east and west of the harbour. There are numerous other sandy beaches along the coast at Yellowcraig, Seacliff, Tyninghame and Gullane Bents.

Walking
A walk to the top of North Berwick Law provides spectacular views of East Lothian, the Lammermuir Hills, the Firth of Forth and across to Fife. This distinctive drumlin has a clearly marked path and takes half an hour to climb from the car park.

Cycling
There are many quiet roads to cycle on and bikes can be hired from Law Cycles on the High Street.

Boat Trips
There are boat trips available from the harbour to Fidra Island and to the Bass Rock. This is a volcanic rocky crag and one time prison standing guard on southern coast of the Firth of Forth. The Rock is of particular interest to ornithologists as you can see razorbill, gannet, guillemot, shag, kittiwake, puffin and fulmar.

Golf
You will find some great links and parkland courses in East Lothian including the world famous championship Muirfield golf course, with North Berwick and Glen golf clubs within walking distance.
