North Berwick is one of East Lothian's most beautiful and popular seaside towns. The following is a quick introduction, but of course there are guides a plenty and you can always research more fully on the internet or visit the local Tourist Information Centre.
Beach House is only a few minutes walk from the harbour and the Scottish Seabird Centre as well as the towns shops and restaurants.
Train & Bus - 25 miles to Edinburgh
Train - 30 minutes every hour
Bus - one hour every 30 minutes
North Berwick Sports Centre
Swimming pool, health suite, trampolines, squash, badminton & soft play area.
The Lodge Grounds
In addition to open parkland facilities include crazy golf, trampolines, skittles or a relaxing stroll through the aviary.
Putting green and tennis courts
Enjoy a boat trip round the spectacular, world famous Bass rock aboard M.V Sula II, see over 80,000 gannets, puffins, seals and much more with an informed commentary on the bird life and local history.
Scottish Seabird Centre
An award winning five star tourist attraction. Use the interactive cameras to view the nesting gannets on the Bass Rock, or watch the puffins and seals on the Isle of May. Take a stroll through the discovery centre and enjoy the wonders of scottish seabird life. Take a browse through the gift shop or relax inside or out with some delicious food and drink.
Berwick Law walk
Rises 613 feet and gives a magnificent panoramic view of much of Lothian, into the Scottish Borders and across the Firth of Forth to the Fife coast. On the summit of the Law is a signalling station used during the Napoleonic conflicts and a pair of whale's jaw bones. Well worth the effort.
There are many lovely sandy beaches in the area, take a stroll through the woods to Yellowcraig with its sand dunes and views over the Forth Estuary to Fife or, for the avid shell seekers, the beaches of Gullane, home of five famous golf courses.
Tantallon Castle has spectacular views over the Forth to the Bass Rock and is perched on a cliff top, whilst Dirleton Castle, surrounded by its beautiful gardens, is set in a pretty conservation village.
Could there be a better destination for golf? North Berwick features three fantastic course and East Lothian has a further 19 courses offering choice to golfers of all standards.
North Berwick West Links offers a unique golfing experience, and poses a true challenge for even the most proficient golfer. In addition to being an Open qualifying venue it is one of the best and most scenic links courses in Scotland. It is a true links course steeped in history, with traditional revetted bunkers, blind holes, drives over walls and burns together with magnificent views towards the sea. The course is sprinkled with top-notch holes and rewards strategy and guile rather than power hitting.
The Glen Golf Club combines inland turf with a seaside setting and is one of the most popular of East Lothian golf courses. The course provides an enjoyable test of golf for all levels of player. Every hole offers the golfer a different perspective of the Firth of Forth, with views dominated by the Bass Rock. Elevated tees and greens across the course mean that careful club selection, consistency and confidence in iron play are vital.
Situated two miles south of North Berwick, Whitekirk Golf Club has a links feel, but your golf is played on rich, fertile, grassy fairways. The clubhouse combines tradition, refined décor, a warm welcome and quality service. The course was cleverly designed by Cameron Sinclair who used the natural water hazards and undulating terrain to produce an enjoyable challenge for all levels of golfer. Many of the tees are elevated to make the most of the idyllic views across East Lothian. Despite only opening in 1995, the golf course has already earned championship status, previously hosting a PGA Mastercard Tour and Sky PGA Europro Tour events.
You may also recognise many of the other courses throughout East Lothian particularly Gullane, Dunbar, Musselburgh Old, Archerfield and The Open Championship course at Muirfield. These are some of the world's oldest and most admired golf courses offering traditional links and classic inland layouts.
