The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region
The Alpes-Martime region offers a mild and generally sunny climate all year round. There is a very long stretch of both public and private beach facilities along the Promenade des Anglais and public transportation takes you easily all along the coast from St. Tropez all the way into Italy (for the well-known street markets in Ventimiglia); to visit other seaside locations and to explore charming hill towns.
There are public, scenic buses which cost only one euro to numerous coastal destinations, hill towns and also mountain villages for skiing just 60 kms. from Nice. Another ideal way to see the Riviera is by train. You can visit Antibes for the annual yacht show, the Cannes Film Festival or the Monaco Grand Prix.
Nice area
Upon arrival a quick visit to the Tourist Bureau at the SNCF central train station in Ave. Thiers (3 blocks from the flat), or on the Promenade des Anglais, will allow you to pick up brochures and flyers on the current events in the region and on whatever may interest you particularly in the area. It is highly recommended that you make this visit your first stop so you can plan your activities and sightseeing carefully in order to avoid missing anything of interest during your stay.
Nice is an ideal location for relaxing and tanning on the public or private beaches, or participating in sports such as jogging, roller skating, sailing, beach volleyball, fishing or cycling along the Promenade or simply stolling or bench sitting to observe the sunset. Another ideal place to stroll is along the Pietonne (Rue Massena) with its many boutiques, coffee bars, restaurants and ice cream parlors - an ideal spot for relaxing and people watching. Shopping centres such as Nice Etoile and Gallerie Lafayette are within a few blocks.
There are tours and/or guided visits of all types and in all directions by land and by sea. One of the most popular area of Nice is the Old Town flower and vegetable market (antiques on Monday mornings). There are also many outdoor concerts during the summer including the Monte Carlo Sporting Festival and St. Jean Les Pins jazz festival.
