The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region

With the Alps playing bodyguard against inland winds and the sultry Mediterranean warming the breezes, the Côte d'Azur, or French Riviera, is pampered by a nearly tropical climate. This is where the dreamland of azure waters and indigo sky begins, where balustraded white villas edge the blue horizon, evening air is perfumed with jasmine and mimosa, and parasol pines silhouette against sunsets of ripe apricot and gold.
As emblematic as the sheet-music cover for a Jazz Age tune, the Côte d'Azur seems to epitomize happiness, a state of being the world pursues with a vengeance. From Cannes to the Italian border is the real heart of the French Riviera. The region's waterfront resorts—Cannes, Antibes, Villefranche, and Menton—draw energy from the thriving city of Nice, while jutting tropical peninsulas—Cap Ferrat, Cap Martin—frame the tiny principality of Monaco. Deeper into the back country lies a scattering of wild, Latin-accented mountain towns, long cut off from the chic enclaves below. And backing it all, looming icy-white on a clear day, rise the Alps, telephoto-close behind the palm trees. The Ski Resorts of Auron & Isola 2000 are only 80 minutes away making Nice the ideal Winter break.
You could drive from St-Tropez to the border of Italy in three hours and take in the entire Riviera, so small is this renowned stretch of Mediterranean coast. Artists, too, made the Côte d'Azur their own, as museum goers who have studied the sunny legacy of Picasso, Renoir, Matisse, and Chagall will attest. Today's admirers can take this all in, along with the Riviera's textbook points of interest: animated St-Tropez; the Belle Epoque aura of Cannes; the towns made famous by Picasso—Antibes, Vallauris, Mougins; the urban charms of Nice; and several spots where the per-capita population of billionaires must be among the highest on the planet: Cap d'Antibes, Villefranche-sur-Mer, and Monaco.Landscapes and monuments, museums and exhibitions: discover the most splendid treasures in this truly exceptional cultural destination.
The French Riviera has delighted and subjugated some of the most famous artists and personalities.
You, too, can fall under the Riviera’s spell.
The Nice / Fabron area
Nice is the lively capital of the Cote d'Azur and offers 4 km of beach as well as one of the most stunning promenades in the world. The town offers an array of cafes, bars, restaurants and nightclubs to choose from as well as the beautiful market known as Cours Saleya that sells flowers, fresh fruit, vegetables and locally produced cheese.
In Nice you can savour a salade niçoise or soupe de poisson (fish soup) on a sunny terrace at any time of day. The Niçois, in particular, celebrate snacking, and this city alone in France is famous for its street food.
The town has many shops open late as well as unique and charming gift shops if you are looking for something just that little bit different. The old town is charming with it's winding, cobble streets and boutique style shops. There is even a bric -a- brac and antiques market in the old town on Mondays, this is well worth a visit.
Take a trip on the tourist train starting from the Promenade des Anglais. As well as an enjoyable and interesting 'round Nice' tour, it will take you up to the top of La Colline du Chateau. Here you will be able to stop a while and marvel at the view across the red rooftops on Nice old town and across to the sea. Don't worry - the train will take you back down too!
Fabron is to the west of Nice town with green leafy streets, superb villas and some landmark apartment buildings.
There is a typically French local small store nearby for your fresh croissants, bread and basic provisions. We have a new deli/restaurant/bar/bakery and chemist on one site only 500 yards from the apartment called La Pignata. This has proved to be very popular with our guests. The deli serves fresh fruit/veg and spit roast chicken/ribs and potatoes. An ideal takeaway to enjoy on the terrace with a bottle of wine. The restaurant is also extremely popular and realistically priced compared to the prices paid in the Old Town. There is also a Pizza van opposite La Pignata which is open from 6pm -10pm daily.
There is a Spa shop within walking distance that caters for most of your needs. The owner is very nice and speaks good English.
From Fabron it's just a five-minute drive down the hills to the beaches and about ten minutes to the centre of Nice with it's shops and restaurants.

The pictures of this appartment do it justice. It is a superbly appointed home from home and everything you could think of is available in this beautiful place. The views from the balcony are even better in reality, as is the swimming pool (photo does not do it justice) which is more than enough to be shared with very polite French People, many of whom live there. There are many local facilities. The whole ambience is very up market and genteel. If you are looking for a quiet holiday this is your answer. If you want discos et al go somwhere else. This is not for you. But for a family of all ages it is outstanding. Cannot think of a better place place that we have visited. Well done to the owners for creating this haven. It maybe a little more than you expect to pay, but pay it. You will not be disappointed. |
