What's the weather going to be like?
A good question, indeed! Unfortunately, seasonal weather is not consistent from year to year, and even today's forecast for tomorrow often turns out to be wrong. There is nothing unusual about having lunch on the Cours Saleya, with a tee-shirt on, in February, for Carnival, and wearing a jumper, on a summer evening, whilst attending the open air concerts in the Cimiez Gardens. The following guide is based on averages, which can hide a multitude of sins! Please don't sue us if we're wrong!
Springtime temperatures are usually shirt-sleeve warm during the day and cool enough for light jackets at night. Weather often changes day-by-day, with a mixture of clear, sunny days interspersed with two or three days of partial clouds and some rain. When the rain does come, it comes in torrents, but usually briefly.
Summers are hot. But this isn't the day-and-night heat and humidity of the Southern United States. Even on the coast here it cools off at night. The air is often hazy, especially in the mornings. As the morning warms up, the haze burns off somewhat, especially as you get higher up into the hills. Where we are, there is nearly always a gentle cooling breeze.
Autumn days are usually clear and brisk - except for occasional stormy days - an excellent time to see the sites without the summer haze, and with fewer people.
Winters are mild compared with Northern Europe and the USA, and the outdoor life is still king. Although there are some cold days - particularly when it is windy - most of the time you are still able to eat lunch outside even in mid winter. Don't try it in the evenings, though!
On our website we have selected nine of the most popular day excursions from Nice to the Cote d'Azur to whet your appetite.
Details are given of trips to Antibes, Cannes, Digne-les-Bains, Grasse, Menton, Monaco & Monte Carlo, St. Paul de Vence, Saint-Tropez and Villefranche-sur-Mer.
The list is by no means exhaustive; we could add Cap Ferrat, Eze, Gourdon, Tourettes-sur-Loup, Vence....not to mention Ventimiglia in Italy.
All are accessible by car and by public transport, whether train, bus or boat. If you prefer a guided tour Cityrama have half day coach tours from May to October with English commentary to Monaco, Cannes, St. Paul-de-Vence, Grasse, Antibes, Vallaurais, Eze and the Villa Ephrussi at Cap Ferrat.
You can find many more details at the Nice Tourist Bureau, conveniently located a few steps from the apartment at 5, Promenade des Anglais.
One thing we can promise you - you won't be bored!
Nice / Promenade des Anglais area
The Promenade des Anglais, which runs along the Mediterrannean for over 5 miles, is the focal point of Nice. You can walk it, jog it, cycle it, rollerblade it to your hearts's content, then collapse on the beach or buy a refreshing drink from one of the many beach bars.
Or sit on one of the numerous free chairs or benches and watch the world go by.
Nice is an outdoors city. With an average of only 4 rainy days a month throughout the year (London 12, Manchester 15!), a temperature that rarely goes above 90F in summer or below 40F in winter, it is an all-year destination as popular (and as lively) in winter as in summer. It does snow about once every ten years, but the last time was February 2005, so you should be OK until 2015!
Nice is a great walking city and many of our suggestions will involve footing it - but you can always relax on the beach or in an outdoor cafe.
If it's your first visit to Nice, and you don't have much time, you might find a guided tour useful. There are two possibilities, both close to the apartment. Cross over the Promenade des Anglais and head left in the direction of the port.
Ater a couple of hundred yards you will come to the Petit Train (Little Train). This will take you through the old town and up to Le Chateau. A 40 minute trip costs €6 (children under nine €3). However, we don't really recommend it; it only covers the Old Town, the Chateau and the Port, which you'll probably visit anyway and we've never seen anybody looking happy on it - it's more bemused or embarrassed. How did we end up here? But if you don't mind looking like a tourist (or have kids with you), go for it.
A better, but more expensive, alternative (Adults €17, Children €9) can found a few yards further on. The open-top double-decker bus gives a Grand Tour of Nice lasting 1hr 30min and gives you a much better idea of the city layout. From March to early November the service runs every half hour from 9.30am to 6.30pm; the rest of the year hourly from 9.30am to 5.00pm.
The service makes 11 stops and you can hop on and off anywhere you want. It includes Cimiez (Roman ruins and Matisse Museum) and the Acropolis (Museum of Contempory Art). If you pay €20 rather than €17 you can extend the ticket to two days.
There's an average of only four "rain days" a month, but when they come there's still plenty to do.
If you are one of those people whose idea of Heaven is to pop into the nearest bar and stay there until it stops raining.....read no further! Your needs are fully catered for.
But if you want to broaden your mind a bit, and the word "culture" doesn't terrify you, then we have some suggestions.
You may like to note that Nice Municipal Museums are free of charge on the first and third Sundays of each month. Surprisingly, most of the Museums in Nice are open throughout the day from 10 am to 6 pm. However, with a few exceptions, don't expect to find galleries or shops open between noon and 2.00pm. In France, lunchtime is for lunch! Even the parking meters are free - who's going to check them at lunchtime?
A one-week Passe Musée costing €6.10 is available from the Promenade des Anglais Tourist Office, and allows you one visit to a museum each day over a period of seven consecutive days. Another alternative is the Carte Musées Côte d'Azur, giving free access to most of the museums and monuments in the region - a three-day Carte costs €17, a seven-day Carte costs €27.
So much to see, so little time.......
Some of the more interesting local excursions include Antibes, Cannes, Digne-les-Bains, Grasse, Menton, Monaco/Monte Carlo, St. Paul de Vence, Saint Tropez (by boat!) and Villefranche-sur-Mer.
You can find many more details at the Nice Tourist Bureau, conveniently located a few steps from the apartment at 5, Promenade des Anglais, or look at our website which has many suggestions for excursions.
How to get there
The apartment couldn't be easier to find!
You can take a taxi from the airport at a cost of €25 - 30 if the driver is honest: no limit if he's not! Nice taxi drivers do not have a great reputation for being honest!
But the most convenient and cheapest way is to get the Airport Bus No. 98 which departs every 20 minutes from Terminals 1 and 2. Last regular service is 21.00 (Terminal 1) or 20.53 (Terminal 2), although at peak periods (most of the summer) there are later buses up until 23.50 (T1) or 23.43 (T2).
Get off at the Boulevard Gambetta stop, cross over the Promenade des Anglais, and No. 50 Promenade des Anglais is 50 yards to your left.
Cost? €4.00 per person. Time? About 15 minutes.

Guestbook
"Everything from the first description of this property through the booking process and the constant feedback and assistance of the owner really made for such a memorable holiday! It far exceeded our expectations in all areas we would definiteley recommend it to our friends -but not before we have re booked next year !!" (Paul from London)
"The apartment is very well maintained. Support from the owner was excellent. We stayed almost one month with no difficulties at all. The apartment is very convenient to food stores, restaurants, and directly across from the famous beach. The included WiFi access was of particular importance to me. This is an excellent property."(Gary from USA)
"Perfect location - the flat was exremely comfortable and well equipped - much more space than the average rental property. I would certainly return" (Geoff from London)
"The stay exceeded all expectations. Ideally located both from a view perspective but also for access to shopping and transport. This property is a gem!" (Clive from Brussels)
"Everything about this apartment gets a 100% nod - beginning with the booking/reservation process, right through to the final turn of the key in the door. It was delivered sparkling clean, with an excess of towels, and other necessities. The location is prime - with the supermarket around the corner; the bus to the airport outside the main entrance to the building; the shoping and dining facilities within walking distance; and a beautiful ocean view with a clean beach across the street. There's lots of space for everyone! And even free telephone calls to the USA. YES, I would definitely reserve this apartment again, if and when I return to Nice on vacation. It's a jewel!" (Geraldine from Ireland)
