The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region
A short drive ot train ride to Villefranche Monte Carlo, Antibes, Cannes and athe most beautiful scenery of the Côte d'Azur! Italy's right next door. Too many fab features to enumerate... The Côte d'Azur has been inhabited since prehistoric times. At Terra Amata (400,000 BC), near Nice, a fireplace was discovered, one of the oldest in Europe.
The French Riviera has a Mediterranean climate, with sunny, hot, dry summers, and mild winters. Winter temperatures are moderated by the proximity to the Mediterranean; days of frost are extremely rare, and in summer the maximum temperature rarely exceeds 30º celsius. Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes département are sheltered by the Alps, and are the most protected part of the Mediterranean coast.
The winds in this area are usually gentle, blowing from the sea to the land. Rainfall is rare, it rains an average of just 63 days a year. Snow is extremely rare, usually falling once every ten years. In the mountains nearby (1 hour drive), snow is present from November to May. Nice has an average of 2694 hours of sunshine a year. The average maximum daily temperature in Nice in August is 28°C, while the average minimum daily temperature in January is 6°C.
Nice / Promenade des Anglais area
Nice, France's fifth-largest city and dignified queen of the Cote d'Azur, is itself an attraction: year-round sunshine, the rich blue-green sea, diverse shopping, unbelievably beautiful (very long) seaside stroll along the famed Promenade des Anglais, splendid dining, electro-schock nightlife and lovely art-deco façades. But there are several spots that a tourist simply must see, such as the Cours Saleya Flower Market - a cornucopia of ripe produce, sidewalk cafés, souvenir shops and, yes, flowers simply bursting with colours, the Matisse Museum, ancient Roman ruins, the Russian Cathedral and more.
The area is filled with wonderful hilltop perched villages, upscale resort cities, an independent principality (Monaco œuf corse) and neighboring Alps villages. It's also just a short jaunt to Italy. The Mardi-Gras Carnaval in Nice is a wild 10-day celebration featuring daily parades, concerts, street theater and more. Dating back to the Middle Ages, people from around the globe have been descending on this gorgeous French Riviera city each year and year-round to cut loose. No it’s your turn !
