The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region
The city of Nice is the regional capital of the Cote d'Azur on the Mediterranean coast of southern France, and is a very popular holiday destination for travellers wanting to visit the region. Boasting an exceptional year round climate, with temperatures that range from around 10C in the winter up to 40C in the high summer, Nice is as popular with sun worshippers wanting to lie on the (pebbly) beaches as it is for people wanting to tour around the area of Provence, and soak up the laid back lifestyle and exquisite food for which the region is famous.
With good shopping, and plenty of culture in the form of museums and galleries to wander around, Nice has plenty to do during the day, and at night, there is a great nightlife in the city that draws people from the surrounding areas in every day. The city lends itself equally well to a family beach holiday as it does to a short romantic break.
There are cheap deals on package holidays and flights to Nice available throughout the year, and with good prices on car hire too, you can use the city as a base to explore the surrounding area, and see the glamorous resorts of Cannes and Monaco easily on a day trip from Nice.
Nice / Place Massena area
AREA OF PLACE MASSENA: This area is the place to be for dedicated shoppers, with multitudes of designer stores side-by-side. Galeries Lafayette, the most famous department store in France, has a large outlet at the start of the the Zone Pietonne (poedestrian zone). All the top brands are displayed over five large floors in the "Harrods" of France.
Next to Galeries Lafayette is Place Massena. Named after Andre Massena, a glorious French General, it is a vast square where you can see Avenue Jean Medecin, Old Nice, the Zone Pietonne and the Promenade.
Locals regard Galeries Lafayette and Place Massena as the real heart of the city and its proximity to Old Nice and Central Nice make this area perfect for a stroll or simply a sit in the park. Take time to see the palms and roses at the Jardin Albert 1er (Albert I Garden), Nice's oldest gardens, and the Jardins Suspendus du Paillon (Hanging Gardens of Paillon), a stepped garden filled with azaleas, camellias and aromatic pines.
Parallel to the beach, Place Massena is a splendid area at the centre of the three most popular areas of the city, the Quartiers Musiciens The old Town and the Carre D'Or. Place Massena has a tranquil park and fountains where you can relax with a newspaper and a coffee, winter through to summer.
Aptly named streets, such as Rue de France, offer a window into the French lifestyle that has lured generations of visitors keen to experience a more European way of life. The Carre D‘Or is perfect for those who want to de-stress, sipping a fine Bordeaux from the balcony of this fine apartment.
This area was the epicentre of the construction boom that began in the late 19th century, when Europe's elite built top quality buildings for winter residences. The volume of grandiose apartments that still exist today gives buyers plenty of choice when purchasing.
Properties in this area benefit greatly from their proximity to the beach. In summer, the beach is thronged with French and foreigners alike, all taking advantage of the warm yet temperate climate. There are a variety of water sports available and beach volleyball is the activity of choice of the local youth in Nice. On a fine evening, why not have dinner at one of the many restaurants directly on the beach.
Although the Carre D'Or is one of the most sought after areas of Nice, parking and terraces are hard to find since most of the buildings were built in the late 19th century. However Place Massena has a hidden underground car park costing 100 euro/week to park your car. Also there is cheap car hire from a local company allows you to park (free of charge) in their underground car park overnight if you feel the need to drive.
