The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region
The city of Nice is the regional capital of the Cote d'Azur on the Mediterranean coast of southern France and is a very popular holiday destination for travellers wanting to visit the area. Boasting an exceptional year round climate, with temperatures that range from around 10C in the winter up to 40C in the high summer, Nice is as popular with sun worshippers wanting to lie on the (pebbly) beaches as it is for people wanting to tour around the area of Provence and the Cote d'Azur, and soak up the laid back lifestyle and exquisite food that the region is famous for.
With good shopping and plenty of culture in the form of museums and galleries, Nice has plenty to do during the day. At night there are wonderful restaurants, bars and nightclubs that draw people in from the surrounding areas. The city lends itself equally well to a family beach holiday as it does to a short romantic break. It is also appeals to those who would like to do day hikes in the hills along the Cote d'Azur and those who want to explore this fascinating area in depth.
Flights to Nice are available throughout the year and with good prices on car hire, you can use the city as a base to explore the surrounding area, particularly Provence. The glamorous resorts of Cannes and Monaco can easily be seen on a day trip from Nice and the easiest way is to use the very efficient trains or buses that link the whole area.
Nice / Central Nice area
Avenue Jean Medecin/rue de Suisse This is the main street of Nice. It runs from Place Massena to the train station and is filled with a variety of shops, brasseries, cinemas and restaurants. It is named after the city's most successful mayor who was born here in1890. He served a total of 34 years in two terms and was primarily remembered for his fierce opposition to Charles de Gaulle. He is seen as the city's greatest mayor and the naming of one of the busiest streets in Nice after him is testament to the admiration he still receives. Rue de Suisse is positioned towards the top end of of this famous shopping avenue which means you can explore it all on your way to the beach or Old Town. Adding to this, there are a number of side-streets with yet more local shops where some of the best bargains in Nice are to be had as well as an un-countable amount of patisseries and boulangeries.
The new silent tram now goes down Jean Medecin into Place Massena then towards the Old Town, the Modern Museum and the Old Port for those who prefer not to walk.
The Notre-Dame basilica (directly opposite the apartment) was built in 1864 and is the largest church in Nice. It is the oldest of the modern religious structures erected in the heart of the new town after Nice became part of France in 1860. In the summertime, concerts are occasionally held in the early evening and can often be enjoyed from the balcony! Less than 5 minutes from here is the only English language bookshop in town, which is both a general bookstore and the best place to buy history books and guide books of a local nature.
Transport links on this avenue are second to none, with the main train station at the end of the street and the main bus station no more than 10 minutes away. Both can be used to visit the hill-top village of Eze, the Principality of Monaco-Monte Carlo, Cannes, Antibes, the Italian market towns of San Remo and Ventimiglia and plenty other delightful villages.
Festivals are numerous including the Carnival in February, the Cannes Film Festival, the Monaco Grand Prix, the Christmas Markets as well as other small local celebrations

We had a lovely time in your apartment and didn’t want to leave – we’ll be back next year! – Mr and Mrs F.Coombes. I was totally rested in this apartment and my conference presentation benefited from me not being stressed by my accommodation. I will pass on your details to colleagues. Roy Belling
