The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region
Nice is situated in the very eastern part of France and right on the Mediterranean Sea. It is very close to Italy so much of its culture and cuisine is Italian influenced. It is only an hours drive from some of the most beautiful unspoilt countryside in the Haute Alpes-de-Maritime and the Mercantour Park. In winter you can ski around the Vesubie Valley at Auron and further up at Isola 2000. The perched hill villages of St. Paul de Vence and Mougins are nearby in a westerly direction whilst the delights of Monaco, Roquebrune and Villefranche can be found just the other side of Nice towards the Italian border. There is something for everyone.
Nice / Vieux Nice area
Nice has something to offer all year round. There is the famous Carnival in February with its fantastic themes of floral floats, May and June herald the Film Festival in nearby Cannes and the Monaco Grand Prix whilst in July the fireworks on the beach end Bastille Day. July also offers the brilliant Jazz Festival in Cimiez, a must for music lovers of all tastes. September and October offer all sorts of Fairs and Fete Days to celebrate wine harvests and the fishing traditions. November and December you can shop 'til you drop in the Etoile and the smart shops on and just off Avenue Jean Medecin while the Massena Gardens hosts the huge Ferris Wheel lit up for Christmas as are the palm trees which line the Promenade des Anglais. Some of the most beautiful Baroque churches and palaces can be found in Nice as well as excellent Art Galleries and Museums.
How to get there
Fly to Nice Cote d'Azur airport and take the local bus which stops at both terminals and costs 3.50 euros one way per person. It stops at the Gare Routiere just a 5 minute walk from the Studio Apartment. There are a huge selection of cheap flights which now come into Nice.
