About the home

Le Contadour (haunt of artists and writers) is located just 20 minutes drive from Nice, Vence, the many famous beaches and tourist spots. Highly rated as 5* it maintains its peace and serenity in an area of outstanding beauty.
The architect designed villa is ideally located for accessing all amenities of the village of Gattieres, just a short walk from the villa. The local markets which provide wonderful fresh produce, and the excellent restaurants in the area, where delicious home made food and local wines can be sampled are on the doorstep! Sip a cup of frothy coffee and be tempted by the aroma of hot croissants, in a local bar and enjoy participating in village life.
Visit the famous resorts of Nice, Monaco, Cannes and St Tropez - all a short drive away, or escape to the mountains and visit the ancient perched villages where time stood still.
Within the grounds of the villa you will be able to benefit from an exotic pool, surrounded by Mediterranean plants and trees. Pick your own oranges, lemons, or figs. Enjoy an al fresco dinner on your private terrace under an ancient olive tree. Wake to the sun streaming through the shutters of your bedroom, and the aroma of wisteria and jasmine.
At Le Contadour, you will enjoy all the benefits of life in France, and for those who seek a hideaway, different from the masses, whether young or old, it is right here, waiting for you. Many of our visitors return year after year, from all corners of the world.
Enjoy tennis, fishing, and cycling, cookery, painting, French lessons, excellent wining and dining. An excellent centre for viewing the exciting Cote d'Azur, but without the crowds!
You will find a little bit of paradise only for discerning travellers.

There are two delightful bedrooms. One has twin beds, (which can be converted to a double bed,) and faces south, with french windows to a terrace overlooking the valley. The other, equally charming room, also has twin beds. Both bedrooms are linked to a spacious, elegant shower room and toilet. There are plenty of storage areas. The kitchen area provides all that you would find at home and more!
The apartment measures 100sqm. Every comfort has been incorporated to ensure that your stay is peaceful, comfortable and even better than "home from home".

For your added enjoyment we have a satellite tv system with many of your favourite television programmes in English/German/Italian . Plus a full video and DVD library with all the latest films. You will also find a large library of English books and games.
Wi-Fi internet connection is available, free, for those who can't leave their work behind them. English, Italian, French and some Spanish is also spoken spoken.

Further details outdoors:
The pool is shared with the on-site owners, but your privacy is observed at all times. We usually swim when guests decide to go out! There is a private, secure parking area within the electric gates of the villa.
The BBQ, and pizza oven are available for your use, plus the poolside furniture. You are welcome to pick the fruit from the gardens which extend for 2500 m. There is also an outdoor bar next to the built-in stone BBQ. The private terrace next to the kitchen is furnished with table and chairs, plus loungers for romantic outdoor dining.
We protect your children with a pool alarm. We also have lots of toys for the children and facilities for babies.

The swimming pool can be used whenever you wish and the villa/apartment is open all the year round.

Conditions

Families are welcome, but unfortunately, pets, no as we have two lovely cats.
Smoking is only permitted outside on the balconies or terraces as we have smoke alarms inside the apartment for your own safety.
A deposit of 25% of the rental will be required on booking. Confirmation will be forwarded by email.
Refundable security deposit of 350 euros required on arrival. (subject to no damage)
Deposit non refundable. (travel insurance strongly recommended)

The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region

The department of the Alpes Maritimes benefits from over 300 days of sunshine a year. It has one foot in the Mediterranean, and the other in the mountains of the Alpes. There are over 40 kms. of beaches, bays, and innumerable mountain villages, approaching the Italian border. Within the department, there are many beautiful parks, one of which is the Mercatour renouned for its magnificent walks.
The area is also famous for its production of well-known perfumes, and flower growing is especially cultivated in the region. Excellent wine and olive oil are produced locally.

The Nice / Gattieres area

Gattieres, is a medieval perched village, which has hardly changed since the 12th century, and only 20 MINS FROM NICE! It has all that one could require whilst on holiday, from a renowned bakery which provides even for the House of Monaco to excellent restaurants with regional, provencal menus. In July, a well-known professional opera performs in the open squares of the village. Gattieres, is centrally situated to visit the famous coastal resorts of Monaco, Nice, Cannes, or St. Tropez. For the active, there is sailing, swimming, golf, tennis, fishing, climbing, walking, visiting the many museums and art galleries, showing works from the famous provencal artists. Every pursuit can be found in the playground of the Cote d'Azur.

Fly into Nice using a budget airline such as Easy Jet, hire a car over the internet then drive along the R202 heading north, direction Dignes. Cross the bridge at La Manda, and take directions Gattieres. The villa is located on the Route du St. Laurent, 650 metres from the village. Journey time, approx. 20 mins. from the airport of Nice International.

“Prime spot to discover Nice surroundings and relax in superb premises.” We spent an absolutely lovely week in Le Contadour. The location was excellent to have daily excursions into the surroundings. Weather was hugging us all the week, view from our dinner table was magnificent and early morning swims in the superb pool was a good day starter but the most enjoyable was our lovely host couple, Liz and Quentin. They tend to have the skill to make their guests really feel at home and get the most of their stay - and all with a delicate touch.

“Cannot recommend highly enough” What can we say? The only things that outshine the apartment are Liz and Quentin themselves. They could not have been more helpful. The arrangement works very well indeed. The apartment, its balcony and terraces are totally self-contained. We had complete privacy but knew that Quentin and Liz were available for anything we required. It was a delight each morning to open the shutters in the morning and look down the Var valley. We stayed in late July 2011 – when I am informed the weather was unseasonably cool (26 degrees+ Celsius each day) – but the pool was always warm enough for a dip. The availability and exclusivity suited us and the kids (aged 14 and 16) very well. Le Contadour gave us easy access to lots of places – we visited friends near St. Tropez one day and still managed to reach them in about an hour and a quarter. We drove to San Remo (Italy) another day and came back via DolceAcqua and Monte Carlo. Most of the time, however, we stayed closer to home. Gattieres itself is charming, St. Jeannet is 5 minutes down the road. Vence is just down the road from there with St. Paul de Vence a little further on. Keep going and you'll land in Cagne-sur-Mer/Antibes. Catherine and I popped into Nice around 9:30pm one evening for a meal in the old town and a quick jaunt down the Route de St. Laurent du Var saw us on the western end of the Promenade des Anglais in Nice in around 15-20 minutes. We walked into Gattieres each morning for fresh bread (took us about 6-7 minutes). We dined as a family at the Hostellerie Provencale in the town one evening and then dandered back in around 10 minutes or so. Spot on. The fantastic thing about Le Contadour is that it renders the holiday “contract-free”. In other words, you know as soon as you arrive that the bar is set high enough that, if you do nothing else for the remainder of your stay and elect to lounge around the apartment, you'll still have a great holiday. We were surprised at just how often our kids wanted to do just that. Frankly, everything else after Le Contadour is a bonus. Personally, I loved the fact that the superb wifi coverage throughout the apartment yielded a fantastically strong reception in the patio and pool areas also. This meant that our iPhones and my laptop had full internet access no matter where we were – indoors or out. For someone like me who wants to stay in touch – even when on hols – this is a great boon indeed. It also allowed the kids to sit poolside and do their Facebook etc. And what about the dynamic duo? Well, Quentin is a true gentleman with a natural charisma and charm that's all too rare in this day and age. Liz is just fantastic – a wonderful lady but also a real “dynamo”. They both enjoy a good giggle and their relaxed competence soon sets you at your ease. At the same time, you need only see as much of them as you need. Frankly, I'm not sure we saw enough of them during our stay. We cannot recommend Le Contadour highly enough. We “lucked out” (as the Americans say) when Liz and Quentin had a cancellation at just the same time as we decided to book our holiday. We're very happy with that particular piece of serendipity. I'm sure it won't be the last time we see Quentin and Liz. If you're lucky enough to stay here, please accept our envy in advance…
