The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region
Haut-de-Cagnes, paved with pebblestones, offers the panoramic views of the surrounding scenery and offers the opportunity to admire monuments and sites such as:
• The “Chapelle Notre Dame de Protection”, • frescoes dated around 1530. • The Church of Saint-Pierre • The “Maison des Artistes”, contemporary art exhibitions. • The “Espace Solidor” jewellery. • The medieval fortress (today a town museum) is perched on the hilltop • within the walls of historic Haut-de-Cagnes (old town). • Renoir’s home (today a museum).
The Chateau in Haut-de-Cagnes, old town, was built in the 14th century and reworked in the 17th by Henri Grimaldi. Behind the fortress walls is a shady courtyard with a 200 year old pepper tree. The surrounding marble columns conceal a museum devoted to the olive tree, and a small collection of Modern Mediterranean art. There is also a group of paintings bequeathed by Chaunteuse Suzy Solidor. The 40 works, all portraits of her, are by such artists as Marie Laurencin and Cocteau. On the ceiling of the banquet hall is a vast illusionistic fresco of the Fall of Phaeton painted by Carlone in 1621.
The last 12 years of Pierre Auguste Renoir’s life were spent in Cagnes-sur-Mer, at the Maison les Collettes, where warm, dry climate helped to ease his arthritis. The house has been kept almost exactly as it was when he died in 1919 and contains ten of his paintings. It is set in a magnificent olive grove, in which can be seen his great bronze Venus Victrix.
Cagnes-sur-Mer, located in the heart of the Cote d’Azur or the French Riviera, enjoys a privileged location just a few miles from Nice, Cannes, Monte Carlo and Antibes.
We hope that you all get a chance to explore this jewel of the French Riviera and Cote D’Azur.
History Although the Roman legions had already noticed this special location on the Mediterranean coast in the 4th century BC, the history of Cagnes-sur-Mer truly began in the Middle Ages, which was to leave its mark on the Haut-de-Cagnes quarter. Surrounded by ramparts and gates, the mediaeval village today attracts many visitors from all parts. Corbelled houses, old stone, winding alleyways, "pontis" bridges, flowered facades, but also gourmet restaurants and art galleries, are the principal advantages of this town, dominated by the baronial hall of Raynier de Grimaldi, ancestor of the royal family of Monaco.
Famous characters In the years following the First World War, this village became the meeting place for artists from around the world, which earned it the nickname: "the Montmartre of the Côte d’Azur". It was a source of inspiration for many painters- Renoir, Soutine, Yves Klein, Foujita, Modigliani, Derain ... and became a permanent or temporary home to many other artists - Georges Simenon, John Lewis, Georges Ulmer, Brigitte Bardot, Gréta Garbo, etc. The Haut-de-Cagnes quarter is still today a special location for artistic expression and a place to meet personalities from the world of the arts.
A cultural heritage The Castle-Museum was classified as a historical monument in 1948 and regularly hosts exhibitions devoted to artistic events, such as the Festival International de la Peinture (FIP), or to internationally recognised painters and sculptors. The names of Tobiasse, Arman, Paul Jenkins and Hans Hedberg are linked to this site and bear witness to the ongoing cultural activity. The castle also houses the olive tree museum, the Mediterranean museum of modern art, the Maison des Artistes and the Suzy Solidor donation comprising about forty works by names such as Raoul Dufy, Cocteau, Marie Laurencin, Lempicka, Picabia, Van Dongen... Her home on the castle square is now a part of the town’s cultural heritage, The " Espace Solidor" artists workshop is home to permanent exhibitions mainly oriented towards sculpture and jewellery. Religious art is also present in the Haut-de-Cagnes quarter and the frescoes in Notre-Dame de Protection chapel dating from 1530 and representing the Virgin of Mercy, are certainly among the most significant aspects.
La Maison de Renoir Pierre-Auguste Renoir, considered to be one of the Masters of Impressionism, discovered Cagnes-sur-Mer and its "lights" in 1903. He was brought to Cagnes by the painter Ferdinand De Conchy and in 1907 acquired "Les Collettes", a magnificent property of more than two hectares surrounded by olive trees hundreds of years old. In the company of his family, models and friends, he then created many works, including "La Ferme des Collettes" on display in the house. This "Cagnes period" is also marked by sculpture, an art form he explored alongside his friend Richard Guino, a Catalan artist. Renoir was to spend the last twelve years of his life in Les Collettes, where he died on 3 December 1919. Eleven paintings by the Master and twelve sculptures are today permanently displayed in the house, which since 1960 has been classified as a municipal museum .
Water sports The sea at Cros-de-Cagnes is ideal for water sports. Sailing, windsurfing, water-skiing, wake-boarding, diving, and so on are possible all year round thanks to the warm and sunny climate
Racing The race course in Cagnes is one of the finest in France.
Nice / Haut de Cagnes area
Perched on a hill in the "hinterlands" of Nice, Le Haut-de-Cagnes is one of the most charming spots on the Riviera. Naomi Barry of the New York Times wrote that it "crowns the top of a blue-cypressed hill like a village in an Italian Renaissance painting." At the foot of the hill is an old fishing port and rapidly developing beach resort called Cros-de-Cagnes, between Nice and Antibes.
For years, Le Haut-de-Cagnes attracted the French literati, including Simone de Beauvoir, who wrote Les Mandarins here. A colony of painters also settled in -- Renoir stated that the village was "the place where I want to paint until the last day of my life."
How to get there
Fly to Nice airport, take a 15 minute taxi ride to the medeival hill-top village. Alternatively, rent a car and drive up there. Parking is free either below the house or above the house. Directions: When you get into Cagnes sur Mer, look for brown signs posted 'Haut de Cagnes' and 'Bourg Medieval'. When you get to the top of the road and you are in doubt because you can see that the road has hit a junction with three other roads, one of which leads downhill between the walls of two buildings that you can barely pass, you are there. The house is called 'La Cagnotte' which is on 2 Chemin des Caucours, Haut de Cagnes. It is just opposite the entrance to the Swedish Church. Ask for 'Eglise Suedoise' if you get lost up there. Look for the pastel blue railing and you are there. Parking is available in the little car park just down the hill from the house.
