Apartment in Old Town
About the home
A one-bedroom apartment on the top floor, with lift, in a pedestrianised street in the Old Town. The bedroom and living room open out onto a private and secluded south-facing balcony. A minutes walk from the apartment presents you with a boulangerie for your breakfast croissantes or baguettes. All around are numerous little shops, restaurants and cafes. The main fruit and flower market is two minutes walk. The Promenade and the beach is about three minutes walk and there is easy access to buses and trains to Antibes, Cannes, Monaco, Menton and beyond. Just up the hill from the apartment there are wonderful views of Nice and the Cote d'Azur and on the other side of the hill the Port with its fishing and pleasure boats. You can catch a ferry to Cannes, Iles de Lerins, St Tropez or to Corsica.

Further details indoors:
The apartment is on the fifth (top) floor of a recent building blending in with the traditional Nicoise style. It is very secure with a main door in from the street, then another locked door into the lift hall. We have refurbished the interior as our own home and it is well equipped for all year round occupation. It's the sort of place that you are happy to come back to after a day exploring and a place to spend time in if you prefer to relax or to eat-in. We have a high proportion of repeat visitors who prefer our apartment to others that they have tried.
Further details outdoors:
Nice is an all year-round destination with a wealth of facilities for water sports, museums, art galleries, shops and simply relaxing at a pavement cafe watching the people go by. Matisse, Picasso, Cocteau, Chagall, Dufy and many other famous artists lived and worked on the Cote d'Azur as well as writers, philosophers and composers. The apartment is very near the Cours Saleya market selling fruit, flowers, spices, cheeses, patisseries with a bric-a-brac market on Mondays. It is a true cosmopolitan city which depends on and welcomes visitors, yet the Old Town is like a self-contained village.

Bookings are flexible with a minimum of three nights. Our housekeeper is Irish and is always at the end of phone to deal with any problems. We normally post the keys about a week before you go, alternatively she can meet you at the apartment for an additional charge.

Nice has only been part of France since 1860, previously administered from Turin, so there is still an Italian flavour to the buildings, people's names, the cuisine and the easy-going lifestyle.
The Old Town is the original medieval part with the Chateau Hill rising above: this is where the castle used to defend the city, now a beautiful public park with stunning views of Nice and the coast. The local language Nicoise is still reflected in the street names.
The climate is kind, not too hot in summer with mild winters: until relatively recently the 'season' for visitors to Nice was the winter.
The Nice / Vieux Nice area
It is short walk to the beach where you can hire loungers and parasols, with restaurants and bars situated on the beach itself during the summer months and watersports for the more energetic. It is lovely to walk along the Promenade des Anglais to watch the other people go by and to visit the Port full of pleasure boats.
There are boat trips along the coast to Cannes or St Tropez: we particularly like to go to the Iles des Lerins, little islands just off Cannes. It is short bus ride to Villefranche, Beaulieu or Cap Ferrat, a little further to Cannes, Monaco or Menton, the bus station being a short walk from the apartment.
Eze Village is a short bus ride away, perched on top of a hill with wonderful views of the coast. There are so many places to visit, we can only mention a few such as the Aquarium in Monaco (where Jacques Cousteau was based), the Matisse and Chagall museums in Nice Cimiez, the Villa Ephrussi on Cap Ferrat.
There is a lovely walk from Beaulieu to St Jean Cap Ferrat along the coast and you can continue around the Cap itself.

We had a lovely week in this apartment. The kitchen was well equipped for anyone who wanted to cook, the bed was comfortable and everything was clean. The seating in the lounge was comfortable and we made use of the CDs and books already there. No English channels on the TV, French only. The apartment is on 5th floor, with a lift, which seems to be unusual in the Old Town. It was generally very quiet. The location was fantastic, close to lots of restaurants and bars and only a 5 minute walk to the sea and the glorious market on Cours Saleya. When we first arrived, just as it was getting dark, we thought we'd never find our way around but it was actually really easy once we got used to the tiny streets. We were provided with really good directions which helped us on the first night. |

Four of us stayed in this apartment during the Autumn half term. Richard made it so simple to find, when we arrived, with photographs guiding us all the way to the front door. The location is fantastic, right in the heart of the old town, and within easy walking distance of the sea, as well as being surrounded by wonderful cafes, bars and restaurants. The apartment itself is clean and well equipped and was easily big enough for four of us. The balcony was lovely for breakfast and a proper sun trap, even at the end of October. Nice has plenty to offer, and although we were there for a whole week, there is still plenty more to do should we ever go back. I highly recommend both the apartment and the city. |
