The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur region
Nice is the jewel of La Cote D'Azur and a fantastic place to spend your holiday. It's easy to get to and the airport is only 7 km from the center of town. There are miles of great beaches and near perfect weather for most of the year. You can do all kinds of water sports here from swimming and snorkeling to sailing, jet skiing, paragliding and more. Cycling is another favorite activity as the roads along the coast offer some of the worlds most beautiful seaside views.
Home to one of the most beautiful Old Towns in Europe which is always bustling with activity. You'll want to visit the daily outdoor marketplaces here or shop in some of the numerous specialty boutiques. There are tons of great restaurants serving the best of Mediterranean and world cuisine as well as bars and nightclubs featuring great live music year round. There are many short day trips you can make within the region from Nice. Try visiting Monaco or Eze village. St. Paul de Vence is also strongly recommended and Italy is only 30 minutes away by car.
You can get to all the best of Nice on foot from the apartment. There are tons of great bars and restaurants in the Port neighborhood and close by in the Old Town. Two supermarkets are within 300 meters and around the corner there is a small market with all the basics open daily. There is a nice bakery around the corner as well which is great for croissants and pain au chocolat in the morning. The magnificent Place Garibaldi which is just behind the flat is a great place to see Nice in action. The large pedestrian square is filled with outdoor cafes, great for enjoying a fine mediterranean meal, some lovely wine or a coffee while watching the Nicois go about their business.
Take a walk up to the Chateau which is right next door and check out the stunning view of the entire city and sea. Wander around the ancient Roman ruins up there and don't forget to visit the beautiful cemetery and waterfall. Walk down the other side of the hill and you are in the Old Town right next to the beach.
Go ahead and get lost in the centuries old streets of Vieux Nice. Shop at the markets on the Cours Saleya where you can pick up all the best local products like locally grown seasonal fruits and vegetables, olive oils, honey, and more. Don't miss the famous flower market open every morning. On Mondays the Cours Saleya hosts an enormous antiques market.
Take a walk through the brand new park that runs the length of what used to be the Paillon river separating the Old Town from the newer part of the city. The city tore down the old bus station and a large 3 story parking lot and replaced them with this gorgeous park restoring Nice to it's former beauty.
We've got loads of great museums as well. The Modern art museum is 500 meters from the apartment is is definitely worth a visit. Go see the extraordinary Matisse museum in Cimiez. It is located on a hill in central Nice in the midst of a large park full of more roman ruins and an authentic Franciscan monastery.
And finally make sure you go for a nice long walk along the Promenade Des Anglais. There is much more to do in Nice of course and feel free to ask me for more tips and suggestions.
