The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region
Nice is situated in the Alpes-Martime region between the azure sea and the limestone ranges of the Alps. Nearby and easily accessible are renown hill towns such as Grasse famous for its perfume makers, Eze for its medieval "eagles-nest" village and exotic garden, Vence for its colourful market and history of being home to renown belle époque painters, sculptors and ceramic artists, as well as the medieval villages of Peille and Peillon. Nice has 4 km of beaches, and there are lovely sandy beaches in Villefranche-sur-mer (a fishing harbour and site of a 16th century citadelle) and St. Juan les Pins (renown for its jazz festival). St. Jean Cap Ferrat is a prestigious haven for international celebrities and home to Villa Ephrussi de Rothchild and Beaulieu-sur-mer has an impressive yacht harbour and discreet palm-lined beaches. Cagnes-sur-Mer is surmounted by a picturesque village and 14th C. castle and a Renoir museum.
The Nice / Baumettes area
Famed for its Azure sea, promenade and beaches, Nice prepared a bid for the Winter Olympics! the sun shines 300 days per year. The promenade des Anglais was so named because Nice became the favourite wintering spot for Victorian England. Nice is second only to Paris for galleries, museums, theatre and Opera. Nice offers a wealth of activities from art (Chagall, Matisse and Dufy, modern art museums and art galleries); culture (theatres, opera, spectacles, concerts); sports (golf, tennis, cycling, riding, paragliding, swimming, SCUBA diving), and plenty of night-life. It is a safe city.
Nice has excellent bus and tram systems serving extensive pedestrian areas.
There are organized activities for tiny tots, seniors and the disabled. There is the whole spectrum of bookshops, coffee bars and restaurants, ice cream parlours, casinos, original language cinemas, lectures, exhibitions, guided tours, historical monuments and sites; markets and shops.
Nice has perfect transport links. Apart from the airport and the TGV there are good cornice roads and rail links to Monaco, Menton and Italy to the east, and Antibes, St Tropez etc towards Marseilles. The Autoroute runs behind nice and the main road to Grenoble starts 3k from Baumettes. You can walk in the hills within 40 min and walk or ski in the Alps in 2 hrs door-to-door.
