Home description

The apartment, ideal for a short break or longer vacation at any time of the year, has been lovingly restored and exquisitely furnished by the present owners for their own holidays, and is currently available for the discerning visitor seeking accommodation of outstanding quality in a spectacular location directly on the sea front. Designed to sleep up to four adults in comfort, the 600 sq.ft. apartment has the original 1930s herringbone parquet flooring in all areas except the kitchen and bathroom, elegant glazed doors between the light airy rooms, a collection of antique, Biedermeier, Art Deco and modern designer furniture, a fully fitted Italian kitchen and a stylish bathroom with Italian azzurro di Caltagirone ceramic tiles. Each of the three main rooms features the carefully restored 1930s plasterwork and a display of original artwork, mainly Polynesian. The apartment has an unusually favourable position at the front corner of the building, providing sea views to the east, south and south-west that are truly breathtaking. “C’est magnifique” is the most frequent reaction of those who have seen the apartment since refurbishment was completed..

The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region

Nice is an ideal location also for exploring the rest of the Côte d’Azur: there is an easy rail connection to Monte Carlo to the east, though the coast road via Villefranche is also truly spectacular. In the other direction, Antibes, the historic old town surrounded by ramparts, is easily accessible by bus or train, and the fast train to Cannes takes just 15 minutes. Otherwise Cannes can be reached by means of a leisurely drive around Cap d’Antibes and Juan-les-Pins. Inland there are also some fascinating hilltop towns and villages, such as Eze. But visitors should leave time to explore Nice itself, that is a place to return to at different times of the year, especially as the city hosts some world-class art collections such as the Matisse Museum and the Chagall Museum. When Matisse came to Nice, he was particularly struck by "the radiant colours and luminosity of the daylight"., and he wrote: "When I realised I would see that light every morning, I could not believe my happiness".

Nice / Promenade des Anglais area

As one of France’s most famous and cosmopolitan holiday destinations, with its remarkable climate Nice is a magnet visitors from many countries who are keen on swimming, walking, cycling, rollerblading and sailing, or simply strolling along, basking in the sunshine and the holiday atmosphere and admiring the views. This particular stretch of the Promenade is dominated by the famous dome of the Hotel Negresco, dating back to the Belle Epoque and reminiscent of a wedding cake, and offers a variety of hotels, restaurants, pavement cafés and piano bars, some with a dance floor. Stylish entertainment is available in either of the two casinos, and it is a leisurely walk along the front to Vieux Nice, the old town with a wealth of fascinating shops, historic buildings, churches and squares that has been attracting artists, writers and musicians for centuries, and where on most mornings you can wander through the flower market in Cours Saleya, or the antique market on Mondays. When the market stalls are packed away, the whole area is given over to restaurants and pavement cafés, where you can order a meal as you watch the world go by, or admire the waterfall on the castle hill framed by Mediterranean pines. The focal point of the Cours Saleya is the Palais des Rois Sardes, dating back to the time when the Savoy dynasty held sway Nice, and indeed the Italian influence is still evident, not just in the local cuisine but also in the people, the dialect and the street names.

How to get there

Fly to Nice Airport with easyJet from Bristol, Liverpool, London Gatwick, London Luton, London Stansted or Newcastle; fly with BMI from Birmingham or London Heathrow. Flights also available with British Airways, Air France, Austrian, Lufthansa, Sky Europe, and many other airlines.
Bus number 98 runs at regular intervals (every 20 minutes during the week, every 30 minutes on a Sunday) between the airport and the town: tickets cost 4 euros and can be purchased from the driver. Ask the driver for the stop closest to the Hotel Negresco.
Taxis in Nice are fairly expensive: the taxi fare between the airport and the town (about 4 km) is about 22-24 euros - but it may be a Jaguar.
The best deals for car hire are available at the airport, but as the apartment is ideally situated in a prestigious location right on the sea front within walking distance of all the main attractions, a car is definitely not necessary.

Further details indoors:
Entering the building on the ground floor, the visitor goes through the spacious lobby and up a short flight of marble steps and then takes the elevator to the third floor. Once inside the apartment, the hallway, featuring an original African tapestry, leads into a study area that converts easily into a charming double bedroom with direct access to the bathroom. Through the elegant double doors there is a spacious lounge that converts into the main bedroom, with a sofa, a chaise longue, flat-screen LCD satellite TV, a tall wardrobe with full-length mirror and a large Biedermeier chest of drawers, and finally another set of double doors leads into the elegant living/dining room, with a dining table and chairs, a sofa, an Art Deco chest of drawers with the original grey marble top, plus three double French windows each opening onto a charming Art Deco balcony, enjoying sea views interrupted only by the palm trees and beach flags on this prime stretch of the Promenade. Adjacent to the living/dining room there is a stylish modern kitchen, with a full range of brand-new appliances, including a dishwasher and washing machine, plus a Royal Bone China dinner service and a battery of stainless steel pans. Each of the rooms has direct access to the architect-designed bathroom, fully equipped with a washbasin, toilet, bidet and shower: even the bathroom has a fantastic view across the Baie des Anges. Both the study area and the spacious lounge/bedroom are equipped with top-of-the-range Italian sofa beds with high-quality mattresses, offering the same level of comfort as a traditional double bed thanks to the exclusive Lampolet design enabling the seat back to fold down effortlessly. The advantage of the two sets of double doors, an original Art Deco feature, is that during the day the apartment has a spacious open-plan feel, whereas at night in addition to the living/dining room it provides two comfortable double bedrooms that are totally separate, affording the highest standards of comfort and privacy.
The apartment is equipped with automatic shutters, opening or closing at the touch of a button, and all the windows are double-glazed, and state-of-the-art air conditioning system has been installed to ensure a high degree of comfort even on the hottest days of the year, though in general the refreshing sea breezes are sufficient. The building has central heating, an entry-phone system for added security and a resident concierge.

Further details outdoors:
On the ground floor of the building Le Cocodile, a stylish and cosmopolitan restaurant and brasserie, serves excellent food at competitive prices, though many visitors head for Le Forum Plage immediately opposite, that provides beach loungers and sunshades for swimming but also tables where you can sip a cocktail or enjoy one of the local fish or seafood specialities or a salade niçoise as you gaze into the turquoise waters of the Côte d’Azur. In addition to Le Forum Plage, there are other private beaches at regular intervals along the front, though most of the beach is public and accessible free of charge. Beach mats and a parasol are provided for use on the beach.

Guestbook for Promenade des Anglais Negresco

This was the best vacation we have ever had. We fell in love with Nice and the kind people. The accommodation made us feel so comfortable. The location was perfect! Thanks for all your help in assisting us to make the most of our vacation. I’m sure we will be back some day.

Our visit to Nice was made that much more enjoyable as a result of staying in such a wonderful apartment. We certainly hope to return here soon.

I was very impressed with the level at which you had equipped the apartment - everything we could have possibly needed was on hand, which is so nice. I can't imagine any guests not being delighted with their accommodation.
