The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Alpes-Maritimes region
The Côte d'Azur was "discovered" at the end of the 19th century as an illustrious, warm winter wonderland for the privileged classes of British, Swiss and Russian societies. In 1834, an English Lord Chancellor set out to take his consumptive daughter to Italy, but was turned back at the border because of a cholera epidemic. He chose to stop in a tiny fishing village called Cannes. His friends followed, and thus was founded the French Riviera as it came to be known by cosmopolitans, whose contemporary counterparts still spend part of every year there. Monaco made its fortune by opening a casino when the railroad was built in the 1850s. Nice, a long-established city, belonged to the house of Savoy until 1860, when a treaty ceded the town to France. Its Italian connections shine through in Niçois cuisine: here pesto is pistou, and is usually stirred into a vegetable soup rather than pasta. In the last hundred years, southern light has drawn wave after wave of painters: Van Gogh, Gauguin, Renoir, later Matisse, Dufy, Picasso, Chagall... The Cote D'Azur is where the sun shines every day of the year, the delights of French and Italian culture are met side by side and the area offers the best diversity for a holiday whether it be beach, walking in the hills, the finest haute cuisine or casual cafes, shopping, museums ....... the Cote D'Azur has it all.
Nice area
Climatically favoured even in the winter, Nice was praised for its therapeutic benefits which drew foreigners searching for the dry, warm weather necessary to cure what was ailing them. Enchanted by this undiscovered paradise, British, Swiss and Russian high society families returned year after year until an affluent community of royalty, courtesans and artists flourished in the prosperous atmosphere of Belle Epoque Nice. Depending on the season you visit, you are almost certain to witness a festival, parade or other spectacular event that transforms the city into a veritable extravaganza. From Carnival in February to the Jazz Festival in July, there is always an attraction to entertain locals and visitors alike. A schedule of events is available on the City Hall of Nice website. Yet the most captivating spectacle of all, with its splendid coastline and passionate people, is that of Nice itself.
Nice offers everything you could wish for in a holiday - history, spectacular scenery, gentle climate, architecture and of course the sea! The city offers a thousand delights for those who really get to know it: from the Sardinian neighbourhoods around the port to the Victorian avenues of cimiez, from the breathtaking panorama at the top of Mont Boron to the narrow pictureesque streets of the Old town, from the footpaths that link up to the hills, to casual strolls around the luxury boutiques in the town's pedestrian areas. Le Carré d'Or is the elegant section of the pedestrian zone of central Nice, which begins at the Promenade des Anglais and extends to the tree-lined Boulevard Victor Hugo. A structured promenade should begin at the majestic Place Massena, the veritable centre of Nice easily recognizable by its series of fountains and large, red, arcaded buildings. Walk along the spacious and verdant Jardin Albert 1er, one of the oldest gardens in Nice which links the old and new cities while occupying a coveted central location with an unobstructed, sublime view of the sea. The garden is also parallel to the pedestrian zone where you can browse in small boutiques, enjoy an aperitif or dine in one of many outdoor restaurants.

"We really did have a great time and would love to go back again. Many thanks for providing us with such a lovely apartment and friendly correspondence"
"The apartment has a really nice airy feel to it which was much needed in the heat last week! I really like the flooring throughout and also the bedroom as the simple white décor had a lovely cool, calming feel to it. We also loved the balcony with its lovely views and nice bright cheery table and chairs."
