The Devon region

The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.

Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slaptons long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouths beach and Salcombes location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places dont need to be brash; Bigburys huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.

Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the areas heart; Plymouth the West Countrys biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) is on the areas edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.

Newton Ferrers

Newton Ferrers/Noss Mayo: adjoining small villages beside the river Yealm estuary, sheltered by oak-wooded hillsides, popular for sailing, lovely for walking or just sitting. Essential shops (Newton Ferrers) and good food pubs. Low tide footpath across the creek. Tennis courts; riding stables. Pedestrian ferry to coast walk to Wembury (village), and secluded beach. Mothecombe (nearest sandy beach by car), 4 miles. Plymouth, 11.

"Third visit to this haven of stylishly presented tranquility..... sssshhh don't tell everyone!"

I am surprised I am the only person to have left reviews for Gillyweed and can only assume all the other guests are wishing to keep the secret from getting out that this is one very special place to s… More

Welcome back to Gillyweed! I'm glad to hear that you had a lovely time once again and have passed your comments on to the owners. Although there are no other reviews on TripAdvisor, we do have several on our Helpful Holidays website for perusal, if you should ever like to have a look.

In case many others do catch on to the loveliness of Gillyweed, we do offer quite a useful service you may not be aware of in which a property can be booked a year in advance, if not more. We simply take a £100 holding deposit on a provisional booking for you and if, when the time comes to confirm in the Autumn, you wish to change dates or cancel, that £100 is returned to you. Otherwise, it can be redeemed against the price of your latest holiday.

Not to worry, however; we won't tell everyone.

"Our second stay... we just love the location!"

We returned to Gillyweed as we love the location and the property is superbly presented.

Our only slight disappointment this time was the poor quality of cleaning - none of the floors had been swept or washed, the kitchen stank of fat and the canopy was filthy. It was clear only a cursory clean had been done, which was a shame as it meant my holiday began having to wash the floors and give the kitchen a clean. Not really what you expect but I realise the letting company have to rely on others to perform the changeover but it should have been checked.

That aside, we love the whole property which is decorated with interesting artwork and is very well equipped.

Watching the tides makes you very lazy indeed.... long walks around the headland from Gillyweed are amazing and a great way to earn your stop at the Ship Inn for lunch!

Thanks for your feedback, we're delighted you enjoyed your second holiday at Gillyweed - we agree it's in a superb spot! We will pass on your feedback to the owner regarding the cleanliness, and we're sorry this affected your enjoyment of the property this time. Thanks for contacting us straight away so that we could help resolve the cleaning issues while you were still on holiday. We look forward to welcoming you back to the West Country soon.
Best wishes

"Stunning property in every possible way......."

It is not often you happen across a holiday home that is both perfectly located as well as being beautifully and stylishly equipped. This is it!

The quality of the property is the first thing you notice and this creates a great first impression. I like being surrounded by good taste and this is evident here.

Then there is the situation, right on the river and we were able to take our boat out each day from the slipway in front of the house. The ever changing tides provide a change of view and you could be really lazy and watch it all day.

All in all, we feel we have discovered a perfect bolthole which we will definitely return to and highly recommend (although I hesitate to say that in case it gets so booked up we then cannot get our dates). Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Thanks for taking the time to comment - we're delighted you enjoyed your holiday at Gillyweed.
