B20 - Western House
Cottage | 11 bedrooms | sleeps 25
An elegant, superbly renovated, 1820s, detached house about a mile from the pub in Highweek; an acre of particularly fine gardens, full of specimen plants/shrubs, surround it. To the front, magnificent mature trees and a very large paved area for parking; from this, steps down through colourful shrubs to indoor heated swimming pool (31' x 15'6" x 4' to 5'6" deep) with jet stream and shower-room, loo and table tennis; extensive lawns with gazebo (open fire, barbecue, electric light/power) and, beyond, a wildlife-friendly wood with large pond (parts unfenced, toddlers beware) with island house for the resident ducks - a beautiful, tranquil area.
The house is exceptional. Enormous care has been taken with renovation. Smart, stylish morning room; elegant, width-of-house living room (open fire) with baby grand piano, iPod dock, views of the garden and French windows to a terrace (table/chairs) with gorgeous long views; dining room (gas fire) with table seating 22; ultimate kitchen designed by food-loving owner for several 'foodies' simultaneously to prepare special meals (microwave, Aga, 5-ring gas hob/split-level electric oven, freezer, larder fridge) with polished granite worktops, central work island, slate floor, table/chairs, French windows both sides to suntrap terraces; also pantry with two dishwashers, fridge-freezer; laundry room with washing machine and tumble drier; children's playroom/snug with TV, PlayStation 3; snooker/games room with gas fire, three-quarter-sized snooker table, table football, VDU/DVD, toys; downstairs loo (washbasin).
Stairs from hall up to mezzanine floor with two bedrooms – a large room with three single beds, sofa bed, TV/DVD and glazed doors to balcony, and a double (zip-linked 6' bed or twin) accessed via the large room only. These two rooms share a bathroom (suite plus hand-shower and separate shower), also accessed via the large room only.
Stairs continue up to landing, a family bathroom (suite plus bath-shower) and five more bedrooms, all very individually decorated:
The African Room - a double (access to one side of bed only, washbasin)
The Sunflower Room - a double (zip-linked 6' bed or twin) with en suite bathroom (suite plus bath-shower and hand-shower) and door to a simple single room - can be accessed from landing or Sunflower Room
The French Room - a double (5' bed, washbasin)
The Antoinette Room - a double (zip-linked 6' bed or twin) with additional single day bed and en suite bathroom (suite with free-standing roll-top bath and separate shower)
Attached to the east side of the house is an annexe with separate external access and a decked area (table/chairs). This is smart, but more modest in style: open-plan living room with sofa bed, TV and kitchen area (microwave, washing machine, larder fridge); two bedrooms – a double (5' bed), and a twin (zip-linkable to 6' double, no clothes-hanging space); bathroom (suite plus bath-shower). It's particularly useful for teenagers or grandparents wanting to do their own thing. Also with external access is a detached annexe (dubbed 'The Garden Shed') with two double bedrooms (5' beds, interconnecting door), each with en suite shower-room (wet-room suite), and large patio (table/chairs). 6 TVs/3 DVDs. Professional catering and ready meals available. Arrival after 4pm. Damages Deposit £500. This is a stunning house - you won't want to leave!

The West Country region
Torbay and the Red Cliffs: Napoleon declared Torquay “beau” when he saw it from the sea (true, he was a prisoner and there wasn't much of it then), and certainly it could be in the south of France when, in the sunshine, you look down from most of its seven hills on the expensive boats in its harbour/marina, windsurfers and water-skiers skimming its bay, and palm trees, very well-kept public lawns and flower beds and posh-looking hotels lining its seafront behind a sandy beach. People play bowls in white clothes. The exotic impression fades in its streets, but name a likely resort facility, sport or amusement and you can bet Torquay will have it, as well as some fine houses on its hills.
The three towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham surround a very beautiful bay and make up the West Country's largest resort. Paignton, less glamorous-looking than Torquay, has red cliffs and sand and an excellent zoo. Brixham is the fishing port, with still attractive harbour and tiers of coloured houses around it. There are several sandy beaches, and boat trips across the bay and round Berry Head (lighthouse) to Dartmouth.
North of Torquay is a mainly cliff-coast to the boat-filled mouth of the long, broad river Teign estuary (Teignmouth). Above Teignmouth, its good golf course has wonderful views both inland to Dartmoor and out to sea. The best route to Exeter and places east is via it and the A380 – not the coast road which is mainly ribbon-developed, slow and dull. The most beautiful route of all is by the mainline railway (Brunel designed) which for much of the way between Newton Abbot and Exeter hugs the shore.
Highweek: hilltop village (church, pub) about a mile outside Newton Abbot (market town with leisure centre, racecourse, mainline railway). Golf, 1 mile. Beaches at Shaldon and Teignmouth, 4 miles. Torbay, 7 miles. Dartmoor National Park, 6 miles.
