The West Country region

Cornwall’s visitors are constantly tempted back to the beautiful coastline, tiny fishing villages, hidden coves and the world-class surfing. Or could it be the cliff-top theatre at Mynack, working harbours, the world famous Eden project or St Michaels Mount, cut off from the mainland by a causeway. Or even the endless activities on offer; the Camel Cycling and Walking Trail, stunning coastal paths or the National Surf Centre at Newquay’s Fistral beach. Whatever the reason, Cornwall has long cemented its place as one of Britain’s premier holiday destinations

Newquay

Newquay has long been a popular sea-side resort with golden sands backed by cliffs which advance into headlands and points - East Pentire, Towan and Porth Island - once settled by prehistoric man. The 'new quay' dates back to 1439 when the villagers set about protecting the inlet. During the 18th & 19th centuries Newquay was a pilchard port, exporting salted fish to Italy and Spain: the Huar's House still hands on the clifftop where the huar sounded his long horn to summon the fiserhmen when a shoal of pilchards entered the bay. When the railway arrived in the 1870s the town became a china-clay & mineral port & then a resort. The town is very popular with surfers. Today, Newquay is a vibrant holiday centre with a choice of 11 beaches, offering something for everyone - from fantastic surfing bays to safe family beaches and hidden coves. Whether it's surfing & a lively nightlife, a family holiday with plenty for the kids to do, or a quiet holiday exploring this lovely part of Britain.
