The West Country / Cornwall region
Malpas is located very close to Newquay Golf Club, making it the ideal base if you love golf. The golf club is a links course with fabulous views over Fistral Beach and the Atlantic. An abundance of bunkers plus the ever-present wind associated with a links course. Springy sandy based turf on most holes making for easy walking and good drainage making the course playable all year round. A challenge for the best of golfers. New Year in Newquay deserves a special mention. Everyone turns out in fancy dress to enjoy the celebrations: locals and visitors alike. Festivities start early evening with children and their parents parading through Bank Street. There is street entertainment and markets. As the evening goes on people flock the streets and harbour side of Newquay virtually all in fancy dress, anything from Nuns to Harry Potter. The atmosphere is one of high excitement and fun.
Early September Crantock has been the venue for the annual Big Bale Push. This competition has raised over £24,000 for key charities close to the heart of the local community.
The Big Bale Push is a fun event for all ages. The races are run in teams of four pushing a full-sized round bale of straw weighing approximately 420 lbs and measuring 4’ 6” in diameter over courses of differing length according to the class of race. The main course for the “180 veterans”, and “The Open” is run over a full quarter of a mile through the village, both up and down hill, starting and finishing between the two village pubs - “The Cornishman” and “The Old Albion” . www.crantockbalepush.com
Newquay, Cornwall / Fistral Beach area
Newquay has lots to offer all the family, from beautiful clean beaches to a superb zoo, from an aquarium to a varied night life. Malpas is situated just above Fistral Beach - one of the best Cornish surfing beaches. You can book a surfing lesson at the British Surfing Association hut on the beach, and also hire surf boards, wet suits and body boards on the beach, or from many of the surf shops nearby. If surfing is not your thing, simply take a good book and a bottle of sun tan lotion with you and relax.
Also nearby, is beautiful Crantock Beach. Crantock is accessible via car or the Fern Pit Cafe at the top of Pentire headland down some steep steps. At high tide a little privately owned boat takes you over the River Gannel to the beach for around 70p.
London is 300 miles while a bit closer to home the Cathedral city of Truro is just 15 miles. Well worth a visit is The Eden Project (16 miles) or take a trip to Land's End (42 miles). For some great fish restaurants then Padstow is just 15 miles.
How to get there
By road Newquay is within easy access of the A30 dual carriageway (twelve miles) which is served by the recently improved A30 bypass at Indian Queens, knocking a good 30 minutes off the journey time in the busy summer periods.
Newquay also has an airport (5 miles from the town centre) with flights from the UK between Newquay, Dublin, Luton and Stansted, along with flights from Europe being added as well. Buses run from Newquay Airport to the Town Centre. For more information click on the link. http://www.westerngreyhound.com Newquay railway station is in the town centre and National Express Coaches serve Newquay too.
