The West Wales / Pembrokeshire / Pembrokeshire region

Pembrokeshire's attraction is its peace and tranquillity which has a hypnotic effect on visitors who return year after year, if not more frequently. Within 1.5 miles of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path.
The coastline and villages have changed very little over the centuries. The superb sandy beaches and quiet coves, once the haunt of smugglers, are around every twist and turn of the coastal lanes. Both on the coast and in the Preseli hills there is a profusion of beautiful wild flowers, encouraged by the mild climate, high sunshine hours and influenced by the Gulf Stream.
Pembrokeshire is a haven for nature lovers with foxes, badgers and birds too numerous to mention literally on your doorstep.
No more than 25 minutes drive to all the main attractions, beauty spots, castles, etc. of Pembrokeshire
The Newport Sands area
Newport is defined by its beach - the name in Welsh, Trefdraeth, simply means "Town on the Sands". Newport houses are now amongst the most expensive in West Wales, not simply because of the character of the town or the "golden" sands, but because it is such a complete holiday centre on a par with Tenby, Saundersfoot & St. Davids.
Newport has a diverse range of artist's studios & galleries, pubs, restaurants, small shops (including a bookshop and a candle shop) plus a Boat Club and a Golf Club, coupled with a wide range of excellent walks along the coastal path and up to Carn Ingli for the panoramic views. Perhaps now you can see why this little town has become so popular, not only as a place to live, but as an all round holiday centre.
Traeth Mawr (big Beach) is a long stretch of sand, safe for bathing, windsurfing, body boarding and sailing. Newport Estuary is a haven for wild life and is a favourite among bird watchers. A walk from the Iron Bridge down the side of the estuary leads to the Parrog where there is a small beach, campsite Café Bar and Boat Club. During the summer months the Boat club organise various activities for children including sailing, crab lining and occasional BBQ's. On a summer evening the Parrog is a good place to watch the sunset.
Carn Ingli (Angel Mountain) Once a volcano (last erupted 450 million years ago) stands 350 m high above Newport. It is quite easy to climb but the summit is rocky. Once at the top there are fantastic views over Newport and north to the Llyn Peninsula. On a clear day Cadair Idris is visible on the horizon
The Gwaun Valley approximately 3 miles from Newport is a beautiful glacial valley which is wonderful for bird watching, walking and peace and quiet. The residents of the valley still celebrate the New Year on January 13th after the Julian calendar as they didn’t accept the Gregorian calendar which we all now use. Step back in time and have a pint at the Dyffryn Arms (Bessie’s) where the beer is still poured from the cask.
The County Town of Ceredigion, Cardigan, is a busy Tourist centre with many shops and good sports facilities. It forms part of the Ceredigion Heritage Coast which totals 21 miles including Nature reserves and Conservation areas. Cardigan Bay, with its many harbours and villages, supports a colony of some 130 bottlenose Dolphins. Porpoises and grey seals are commonly seen.
Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park Gwbert overlooks the Cardigan Island Nature Reserve which is 200 metres off shore. Seals and Bottlenose dolphins can be seen on a regular basis. There are a wide variety of farm animals including llamas, emus and wallabies. Also a children’s playground, sand pit area, café and gift shop. Open end Of March to end of October 10am-6pm. Call 01239 612196 for more details.
Cardigan Heritage centre is open daily 9-5 and shows the history of Cardigan from Norman times to the present: 01239 614404
Theatre Mwldan is the Theatre, Arts and Entertainment centre. Open every day the programme includes popular films, world cinema, live shows including dance and music. The tourist information is based in the foyer. There is also a café serving light lunches and refreshments. Box Office: 01239 621200
Poppit Sands is a long sandy beach backed by dunes. Busy in the summer there are public loos and a café. Swim with care as there are strong currents. Life Guards and inshore rescue on the beach. Good for Wind Surfing canoeing and Surfing. No dogs on the beach during summer months.

The highlights were a comfortable cottage with enough space for four adults and 2 kids. We all liked it. Fairly easy to get to villages for pubs, grocery stores etc by car. Without a car don't even consider staying here. If you like rural (this is on a working farm) and quiet it is fine. They even supplied us with a Christmas tree. The drawbacks: the directions to the cottage are not adequate. The gym was sub par. Not clear info on what to do about the electricty at beginning and end of stay. I would encourage a welcome packet with more detail. Not walking distance to village. No scenic walk right around cottage. Must use your car for everything. The grounds needed some attention but it may be more cared for in the warmer weather (we rented over Christmas). |
