About this location
The Western Ireland region
Mayo stands out as one of Ireland’s most scenic counties. Newport is considered the gateway to North West Mayo. A small town of great historical and natural beauty, just 10 miles from the beautiful and wild Atlantic Ocean. The area has spectacular mountain and coastal scenery completely unspoilt. But while you may gasp in awe at the craggy coastline that’s been lashed by the powerful Atlantic, make sure to remember that there’s a lot more going on in Mayo in the West of Ireland.
Ceide Fields are the oldest known field systems in the world (almost 6000 years old), Croagh Patrick is where Ireland's patron saint fasted for 40 days in 441AD, and Achill Island is a stunning spot on the edge of Western Europe bursting with history and awe-inspiring sights.
And if all that wasn’t enough, there’s an abundance of charming villages to visit from beautifully situated Newport to the peaceful town of Cong.
There are many sites of historical interest in the surrounding area. Our home is situated just 100mts from the now famous Greenway Cycle and Walking Trail, which stretches from Westport to Achill Island almost 48km.
This trail is one of the largest off road tracks in Europe with spectacular scenery in a natural and safe environment. Newport also affords many family activities including horse riding, hiking, swimming, surfing, golfing, fishing both river and sea all within 10km.

"Home away from home."
We stayed here in Aug 2012 and again in Apr 2013.
It really is like home away from home for our little family.
Very comfortable, spacious, cosy and so close to pub, greenway, Westport etc.
Very thoughtful welcome pack.
We love it as a base for the green way.
Last year our twins first crawled here - this year they walked their legs off in the house.
I hope next year they will be outside on the swings and slide.
We bring a double bike buggy and they love that too - on green way.
Also discovered that walking the green way is as wonderful as cycling it.

"Home from Home in Newport"
My family stayed at Knockard from 4-11 August 2012 and had a wonderful week. House very comfortable and spacious with all mod cons provided and lovely welcome pack on arrival. Deirdre and Donal very keen for guests to have a good time with advice on local area and restaurants. Provided bikes for our use on the Greenway. Achill Island close by and Keel Beach is just the best. Would highly recommend this home for a family holiday and will return

"Very pleasant home in a pleasant village"
We, a family of 4, spent a great week in April 2012, in this pleasant village of Newport, well located to reach either Connemarea than nothern counties.
The house is very clean, with big beds. And we could have been 2 adults more without any problem.
We recommand the Achil Island, which is gorgeous.
We also ride through the Green Way into splendid landscapes (much nicer to the north than south).
Mary, Deirdre's sister, is very nice and was very helpfull for many things, from the adaptator plug we didn't bring to the place you can find a handmade wool sweater...
We recommand this house, and the kindness of it's owners
We are always pleased to help our visitors in every way we can in order to help them enjoy their holiday in Knockard.
