Home description

Sitting on the edge of the village of Newcastle-on-Clun in the rural Clun valley, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty, The Old School is a luxury conversion of the former village school built in 1830. Exposed beams, a triple height sitting room, wooden and stone floors all give a feeling of space, light and room to relax. The dining room seats 10 in comfort. Set in 3 acres of land - courtyard, gardens and woods on the side of the valley, you may feel you don't want to go out and explore at all. The house offers a perfect rural retreat for up to 8 people. The Clun valley nestles in the wilds of the Shropshire hills. See buzzards circling high above the valley floor. Climb the hills and you may see red kites. Whether it is for walks, fresh air and historic towns or great food and home to a roaring fire, The Old School awaits your visit.

The Heart of England / Peak District / Shropshire region

Shropshire is still one of England's best kept secrets. The landscape is wild and castles abound - this is border country! The County has over 90 places to visit - in the form of historic houses and castles with beautiful gardens, museums and other family attractions.

Newcastle-on-Clun area

Offa's Dyke can be seen from the house and is just one of the many marked trails to explore nearby, which include the Jack Mytton Way and the Kerry Ridgeway. Walk all day and not see a soul and then enjoy a drink back at the village pub. A couple of miles away is Clun with its castle ruins, shops and pubs. The local small towns of Bishop's Castle and Montgomery offer cafes and shops with nooks and crannies to explore. South is the historic market town of Ludlow. Complete with castle and beautiful walks by the river Teme, it is famous for its food shops and restaurants. North is the city of Shrewsbury, Brother Cadfael country, and here you will find larger shops. Closer to home is Church Stretton, gateway to the uplands of the Long Mynd, formed from ancient volcanoes, and where a herd of ponies roam free. The English Marches become the Welsh hills and mountains; another country on the doorstep. Explore the beauty of the Elan valley and its dams, or take the mountain road across to the Welsh coast.

How to get there

The Old School in Newcastle-on Clun in the Clun valley is simple to find. It is just 30 minutes North of Ludlow, 45 minutes South of Shrewsbury and 20 minutes West of Craven Arms.
