The County Down region

It is difficult to find a genre which Co Down does not provide in abundance and it is all within easy reach of the house.

Centrepiece to the whole area is the outstanding natural environment, ranging from the beautiful Mourne Mountains with its impressive lakes, rivers, forest parks, scenic views and associated activities, to the blue flag beaches in/around Newcastle.

The various activities on offer within easy reach are second to none. Whatever your age or standard, you will be sure to find a golf, cycling, fishing, tennis, water sports, horse riding, hill walking or mountain climbing experience which will test and excite you. For the kids, there are a huge selection of adventures to try out, from indoor and outdoor play areas, cinemas, bowling, go-carts, open farms and general good fun. All you have to bring is your imagination.

The history and culture of the area is renowned. From Down Cathedral and St Patricks grave, to heritage centres, castles, stone circles, cairns, stately homes, museums and National Trust locations throughout the area, you may struggle to see them all. On top of this you also have convenient access to to Belfast and all that our Capital City offers, from Titanic to the Opera House, Waterfront Hall, and designer shopping, the choice is limitless. Local pubs will also offer a variety of traditional music to suit all tastes.

With a number of local fishing ports the Co Down area is famous for its fresh fish restaurants. All tastes are catered for from fine dining options to fast food outlets. The variety and tempting options on offer are sure to suit everyones taste.

As a golfer myself, I have to highlight the availability and experience of playing the world famous Royal County Down course in Newcastle, some 3 miles from the house. Challenging (Oh yes) and regularly voted as one of the greatest golf courses in the world. Other great courses within easy reach would include Ardglass, Armagh, Kilkeel, Downpatrick and my own Belvoir Park in South Belfast.

Newcastle

The options and activities within, and close to the Newcastle area, are limitless. To cover everything here would be impossible and therefore we provide an information pack within the house, which will hopefully address many of your queries.

Obviously the mountains and the nearby coastline provide the basis for many of the facilities and activities in the area. Whether you just want to view, or take part in these activities is entirely up to you. The house sits on the edge of Tollymore Forest Park, therefore this is one area which you will spend some time in. With the main Shimna river flowing through it, the views and walks around the river, forest and mountains will never be forgotten

Other facilities and activities in the area worth visiting would include Castlewellen Forest Park with its extensive grounds and maze, the Tollymore National Outdoor Center (approx 1 mile from the house), Castle Ward National Trust site and Exploris Aquarium and seal rescue centre in Portaferry.

The main Tourist Information Center in the middle of Newcastle can assist and help with any specific interests or activities you may wish to pursue during your visit.
