New York City

A brief synopsisOnce home to Brooklyn's largest private book collection, this Clinton Hill brownstone is now the picturesque setting for a family's happily ever after. In this Brooklyn nabe where the streets are infused with the elegance of historic mansions, the atmosphere is charged with Pratt Institute's electric creativity, and weekends are suffused with the Brooklyn Flea's bohemian spirit, you have every opportunity to write your own story.Getting into characterOur protagonists are a third generation New Yorker raised in the Midwest, and a New Yorker at heart who came to Brooklyn by way of Bombay. Their love story is one for the books: a social worker and an ad man met and parted ways at La Guardia airport, only to serendipitously cross paths again on the F train. They chose to write their happy ending in this charming four storey brownstone with their brood of two.The plot thickensFrom the ivy-fringed stoop, choose your own adventure. Downstairs, there's an expansive guest area where swathes of exposed brick are interspersed with chalkboard posts and walls for jotting down flashes of inspiration. Behind the velvet curtains, a guest room spells romance: a pendant lamp sheds light on a scarlet-hued hammered tin ceiling, while a staggering array of books holds the room in a passionate embrace. In the backyard a tented area is ideal for enchanting dinners. The first floor, boasts a kitchen kitted out with an eight burner range inspires attempts at every recipe in the book. With a breakfast bar, and adjoining living and dining areas, there's ample room to feed a whole cast of characters. On the second floor, the nursery conjures up shades of Little Boy Blue, while the spunky girl's bedroom whisks you off Around the World in 80 Days. For the denouement, pry open the heavy antique Chinese doors and enter the serene master bedroom. With the en suite bath's hot tub equipped with soothing jets, you won't need a bedtime story to have the most epic of slumbers.Free verseOutside, a gastronomic odyssey through Brooklyn awaits: vivacious South African fare at Madiba, a heartwarming Tuscan feast at Locanda Vini e Olii, rambunctious Cuban eats at Habana Outpost, and sophisticated New Brooklyn cuisine at The General Greene. Ready to write a Manhattan sequel? The G train is a quick four-block walk away.
