The New York region
Brooklyn Heights is an oasis of calm just across the river from Manhattan. Most of the houses along its tree-lined streets were built during the 1840s and the neighborhood was the first in New York City to be designated a landmark. The Heights has been a haven for poets and writers from Walt Whitman through W.H. Auden and Norman Mailer. Down the street is Pier 6, a vast park featuring water play, volley ball courts, sand and climbing areas, and even a pier from which you can fish in the harbor. You may walk, run, or bike from here to the Brooklyn Bridge and Pier 1, with its carousel, play areas, and picturesque landscaping. Nearby Atlantic Avenue is bursting with restaurants and boutiques and a short walk will take you to Smith Street's unique shops and eateries. Also down the street is a parking garage. There are plenty of grocery stores, two restaurants around the corner, as well as a laundry/dry cleaner. Three subway lines converge a few blocks from the house.
