Capri
About the home
Capri is a lovely home in which to have a holiday, being spacious enough for two families, or a group of adults to enjoy time together. Two of the bedrooms, and one of the bathrooms are on the ground floor, so the house is also suitable for the less mobile.
We have furnished and equipped the house with your convenience in mind, with a variety of games, books, children's' toys and movies, to occupy you on those days when you'd rather stay at home! The conservatory is great for breakfasting in on sunny mornings!
This part of Kent has many attractions to satisfy a wide range of ages and interests. The Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway is just a stroll away, and runs for 13 miles between the seaside town of Hythe, and the amazing shingle coastline at Dungeness. The medieval town of Rye is a short drive away, and Canterbury and Hastings are also within easy reach. Romney Marsh is a wonderful place to walk and observe birds and wildlife, and has a fascinating history of smugglers! There are plenty of beaches within reach, the nearest being less than a mile away.
Please note that as 'Capri' is in Romney Marsh, which means that when the weather is unusually hot and/or wet there can be a greater than average number of mosquitoes around. The house provides mosquito plugs, but please make sure that you bring insect repellent with you just in case.

The South East England / Kent region

The Romney Marsh area - 'a place of big skies' - forms one of the most distinctive natural places in southern Britain, with a unique low-lying landscape reclaimed from the sea over the last 6000 years. The countryside surrounding New Romney is peaceful - one of rich arable and grazing land, dissected by a maze of ditches that drain the land to the sea. It's a flat area, so great for cycling and walking. The Dungeness peninsular is the largest area of shingle in Europe, and home to many species of birds, and unusual (and sought-after) houses made from old railway carriages! Visit the RSPB centre or the lighthouse while you are here.
The coastline is varied, with traditional sandy beaches, and huge areas of shingle and mud flats - great for amazing sand art pictures!
There is also much of historical interest in the area - the Royal Military Canal dates from Napoleonic times and is suitable for boating and fishing, and there are old 'lookers' huts and ancient churches scattered across the marshes.
The New Romney area
This part of Kent is great for all ages and varied interests! The ancient Cinque Port town of New Romney is a ten minute walk from the house, and has a variety of shops, pubs and cafes.
For railway fans, young and old, the RH & DR operate a number of 'special weekends', including Thomas weekends and 'Santa specials', with a special 80th anniversary celebration weekend in July this year. We can make your visit even more special by booking a special carriage or 'the bar car' for your private use for a day! The Kent and East Sussex Railway is just a short drive away.
The seafront is less than a mile from the house, and a 10 minute drive will take you to Dymchurch, a traditional seaside town with sandy beaches and fun fair. Rye is a medieval town with picturesque cobbled streets and unusual shops selling antiques, artwork and collectibles. Port Lympne Zoo (of CBBC 'Roar' fame) is also nearby.
There are several golf courses nearby, the nearest being Littlestone Golf Club, with its links course - this course was used as one of the qualifiers for the British Open when it was held at nearby Sandwich, and you can see it from the house!
Ideas for good days out include:
* Dover, with its castle and secret wartime tunnels
* Canterbury - so much to see, including the famous Cathedral
* Hastings - castle, smugglers caves, the 1066 story and underwater world
* National Trust houses and gardens, including Sissinghurst, with its lovely garden designed by Vita Sackville-West
* Ashford designer outlet, described as one of Europe's most spectacular shopping destinations
* France - easily accessible via 'Le Shuttle' from Folkestone to Calais, or by 30 minute plane ride from nearby Lydd, to the sophisticated French town of Le Touquet.
Alternatively, if you wish to 'get away from it all', days can happily be spent roaming Romney Marsh Nature Reserve, with little else but sheep, birds and picturesque old churches for company!
Food in the local area: The Heywood Cafe at the station (2 minutes walk from the house) serves sandwiches and cooked meals during the day. There are numerous pubs and restaurants serving good food in the local area (some recommendations in the visitor guide in the house). A notable place to go is 'The Pilot Inn' at Dungeness, acclaimed in 'Time Out' magazine and 'The Good Pub Guide'. If you want something more up-market, The Mermaid Inn at Rye, dating from 1156, has an award winning restaurant situated in a romantic setting.
For your self-catering needs, there is a large Sainsburys in New Romney, a 10 minute walk from the house, and also a butcher in New Romney, selling locally produced organic meat. The town of New Romney also boasts an excellent delicatessan, and several good tea and coffee shops. There is also a permanent farmers market, just a 10 minute drive from the house.

Capri is a very pleasant holiday home and presents exactly as it is advertised. It has 5 good-sized bedrooms, sleeping 10, and having 2 bedrooms and a bathroom on the ground floor meant it was particularly nice for those of us of mature years who were happier not to have to climb stairs! The kitchen is great with all 'mod-cons' and the sitting areas are comfortable, though in mid winter we weren't lucky enough to use the conservatory. However, at that time of year it was lovely to have good central heating and hot water. A big hall and back utility room entrance meant we could keep winter wetness and mud out of the main living areas of the house. Another shower and separate toilet would have been great additions. In the area we particularly enjoyed journeys on the little trains of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway and several Romney Marsh villages and churches. The Romney Spice indian restaurant was also a highlight and a big Sainsburys close by, a bonus. The seaside at Littlestone, however, is a bit dreary! |

"Being so close to the railway was great. Close enough to walk to both the beach and shops. Fantastic week - will come again!"
