The Central Southern England region
We have the best of both situated on the Wiltshire/Hampshire boarder on the Northern edge of The New Forest National Park.
South Wilshire, a beautiful country of river valleys, villages, farms and downland with Salisbury's world facmous cathedral city. Described as the City in the Countryside, Salisbury retains much of its historic past with timbered buildings, an Early English Gothic Cathedral home to the famous Magna Carta, a thriving market, a buzzing arts scene, museums and some of England's finest historic houses waiting to be explored. Nearby Stonehenge is one of Europe's most eminent prehistoric monuments, a fact recognized in 1986 when the site and its surrounding landscape was inscribed on the World Heritage List.
New Forest National Park where commoners exercise their right to turned ponies, cattle, donkeys and mules out into the Open Forest. Walking or cycling with foot paths and over one hundred miles of way-marked cycle routes, and without doubt it's one of the best ways to see and experience the New Forest.
History & Heritage
Downton is a very ancient Wiltshire village, six miles south of Salisbury. It lies between two lines of chalk hills with the river the Avon running through its valley. The Borough was created in 1209 as a centre for trade for this busy farming community. The Spring Fairs were often call called Cuckoo Fairs. They were held on or near 23rd April. Downton Fairs stopped in 1914 at the start of the Great War and ran only for a short while afterwards. In 1980 they were revived now being held on the Saturday nearest May Day. There are over 200 stalls with visitors from all over the south of England. Maypole and Morris dancers, clowns, conjurors and bands entertain. The water meadows and The Moot Gardens created in the early 18th century out of the remains of a substantial 12th century earthworks castle make a delightful walk a long the river Avon. Within the local area, there is the Stonehenge World Heritage site, Old Sarum Castle, Mompesson House, Wilton House and Old Wardour Castle.
Romsey Abbey, Broadlands House, Wichester Cathedral and Portsmouth, with its Naval Heritage Centre and Spinnaker Tower are all within a 45 minute drive
Walking, Cycling, Golf & Horse Riding
We are a five minute walk away from the Avon Valley Path which runs from Salisbury to Christchurch and 1 mile from the New Forest Boundary with unlimited walking and cycling. Bring your own bikes or hire locally. There are at least 4 golf courses within a 10 mile radius. Horse riding can be arranged with the nearby stables. We welcome cyclists and walkers and provide maps, a first aid kit, and secure storage for your equipment.
Gardens & Stately Homes
Breamore and Wilton House both have collections of fine paintings. Mottisfont Abbey and gardens must be visited in June when the old-fashion roses are at their most fragrant. Exbury Gardens in the New Forest is world famous for its rhododendrons, azaleas & camellias. Stourhead is a fine 18th century landscape garden with something to offer, whatever the season.
For those who want to explore a little further a field; The Isle of Wight Brownsea Island, Dorset´s Hardy Country, Shaftesbury, Bath, and Longleat are just a few of the destinations to chose from. We are 20 miles from Bournemouth and Southampton for shopping centres and major theatres/music venues.
Salisbury International Arts Festival is a major two week event over held annually at the end of May and beginning of June. The New Forest Show runs during July each year and throughout the year there are race meetings at Salisbury and many musical events held on the Broadlands Estate, the Cathedral, and Wilton House.
There is a superb choice of local pubs, restaurants and takeaways. Salisbury and Fordingbidge have Farmers markets which offer local cheese, meat, vegetables and wine. Downton has its own award winning Hopback brewery and its Summer Lightning Ale can be enjoyed in the area.

"Lovely cottage and grounds, well equipped....just perfect for exploring the New Forest area."
Very much enjoyed our stay at Wich Hazel. We had everything we could want and the local town of Downton had very friendly folks. Enjoyed local food and grocery shopping there.
It's well situated for exploring New Forest and parts of Wiltshire. Salisbury Park and Ride is just a short car ride away. Perfect place for a week. The garden outside the cottage is lovely in May!

I stayed here with my husband for a short Easter break. The flat was perfect - very comfortable and had everything we could need. It was a lovely location, perfect for exploring the New Forest - although you do need a car. I'd definitely recommend this flat - perfect for two people, and with lots of special touches (like cake waiting for us on arrival!) that show how much the owners care and look after their guests.

A fantastic break away, a very comfortable well equipped flat, perfect distance for shopping in Salisbury, and beautiful walks in the forest. Downton has several good pubs for food. Will be back again… More
We will look forward to welcoming you back. The work on Salisbury's market square should be finished and the Christmas market should be better than ever next year. In fact it could be one to make a note of because it has all the charm of Bath or Winchester Christmas Markets but its not as well known or as busy. Wishing you and your family a very Happy Christmas.
