Home description

Ashwini is in an idyllic setting known as Coco Shambhala, meaning place of peace, tranquility and happiness. This is precisely what you can expect, whether you are a couple looking for that romantic get away or group of friends, Coco Shambhala will suit all.

The architect used his penchant for hedonistic spaces to create a luxurious open-air jet pool area. By day this tranquil space is a shady haven cooled by cross ventilation and by night an atmospheric cloistered space with artistically lit pillars, flickering candles and dappled reflected light on the walls.

The bedrooms are bright and spacious with air conditioning to keep you cool away from the Indian sun. Relax and watch TV with a flat screen TV with satellite channels and a DVD / CD player. Both have en suite bathrooms for your added luxury and privacy. There are two balconys offering cross ventilation and an ideal location to relax and watch the sunset.

The kitchen flows seamlessly onto a shady terrace and lounge area in the private garden. This is perfect for entertaining with a dinner party. Surrounding the property are luscious tropical gardens and a shared swimming pool. The freeform jungle pool blends perfectly into its surroundings with tempting cool emerald green water.

The Goa / West India / Goa region

Goa, on the west coast of India, has over 100 Kilometres of coastline divided between secluded bays and golden sandy beaches lapped by the warm Arabian sea. Between October and April there is unbroken sunshine with temperatures that rarely drop below 91F. The pace of life is relaxed. You can spend your evenings enjoying a sunset walk along the beach or a stroll through the street markets in safety.

Although most people come to Goa to relax and unwind there is more to Goa than just its fabulous beaches. Here are a few ideas of what Goa has to offer.

The Portuguese colonised Goa for 450 years and this unique blend of Portuguese and Indian culture is evident in its architecture, mix of religions, cuisine and social structure. There are the colonial old quarters, the magnificent Mansion Houses built at the height of the Portuguese rule and Old Goa, the old capital, built as a testament to the Portuguese wealth and power. There are wildlife sanctuaries, over 400 different species of birds, market towns, a famous flea market which attracts sellers from all over India, designer shops and why not come at Christmas and the Easter Carnival and enjoy some real Goan-style dances. The exuberant Hindu festivals of Divali and Holi are celebrated with as much enthusiasm by this multi-cultural and well-integrated society

We want to show people that there are many interesting "things to see". Above all experience Goa by being out and about. Early morning and late afternoon are perfect times for catching that magical rural scene of bullock cart and driver ambling along country lanes or the water buffaloes having their well deserved mud baths. Watch the sun rise over the river Sal, stand at Chapora harbour and select fish for that evening's meal, fresh from the boats, go to a village festival or Zatra and most of all, meet the people who are fun loving, generous and genuinely want you to have a great holiday.

Night life is generally low-key and mainly centred around the good selection of small restaurants serving wonderful seafood with barbecued lobsters, tandoori tiger prawns and crabs. Try Goan specialities such as Pork Sorpotel - pork cooked in a spicy sauce and grilled pomfret with a masala stuffing and don't forget the beach shacks where you can sample home cooking. There are also a number of restaurants serving French, Italian, Thai and Chinese food. A 3 course tourist meal will cost about £6, a litre bottle of beer 70p, soft drink 20p and tea and coffee 20p.

There are three seasons in Goa - The Dry (Late October - April), The Hot (May and September / Early October) and The Wet (June / July / August).

Nerul area

Nerul, with its ideal position close to Coco, Candolim and Sinquerim Beaches and lovely creeks and rivulets flowing through the area, is fast becoming the place to put down roots in Goa. With the arrival of fashion designers, Bollywood film legends, socialites and the like all currently with projects on the go it is most definitely the place to be. Coco Shambhala is in a quiet backwater approached along a lane that runs from the centre of the Nerul village towards Coco Beach. A car and driver is provided for up to 10 hours a day to help you explore the area and make the short drive to the beach, restaurants and lively shops of Candolim and beyond.

Nerul is located in an idyllic spot where the Mandovi River, the Arabian Sea and Nerul Creek merge. Until a river bridge was built in recent years, few tourists knew of the village and its hidden charms.

Nerul is not new to tourism as it is in Goas age-old resort belt, where Portuguese fidalgos enjoyed holidays. This area, where the affluent would retire for summer fun, then extended right from Pomburpa to Verem, Reis Magos and Nerul. Close to Neruls waterfront stood holiday homes like the palatial residence of the Bishop of Halicarnassus, Dr. Antonio José de Noronha, who was born in June 1763, of Portuguese settlers. In the course of time, locals too came under the spell of seaside picnics and salt-water baths in summer.

The prosperous villagers built the Church of Our Lady of Remedies, which can still be visited today. Founded in 1569, the church figures among the last works in Bardez by the Franciscan Order before their expulsion by the Portuguese. It treasures some old paintings on wooden panels and on walls.

The villagers grow rice and vegetables and are famous for groundnuts and watermelons. There is also, still, a strong fishing community.

Nerul is now famous for the popular Coco beach, the palm fringed bay where there are some beach shacks and one or two small restaurants including one late night beach bar.

Goan villages are slowly losing their original identity. Nerul, too, is likely to shed its natural charm but, for the present, pigs still dart across the narrow roads, children play on the beach, fishermen mend their nets and women are busy in the fields. See it before this life vanishes.
