Enquire nowThe Costa del Sol region
Situated to the East of Malaga the region is called "Axarquía" which derives from the Arabic expression "AlSharq" and means "land in the east". The Axarquía used to be "Bandit Country" in the 19th and early 20th century. "Bandoleros" preyed on traders carrying goods from Málaga harbour to Granada and smugglers brought contraband into Spain from Africa.
Nowadays you can enjoy this mountainous region with its lovely beaches and its unspoilt nature. Stroll through ancient Roman, Moorish and Spanish ruins and buildings. Sit mesmerised through a flamenco dancing, singing and musical extravaganza. Visit the birthplace and museum dedicated to the genius of Picasso, a son of Malaga.
Sample traditional tapas over a refreshingly ice-cold drink, shop for handmade gifts such as hand-pressed olive oil, cheeses, wines, handicrafts and curios, delight in dramatic sunsets and cloud formations, feel relaxed by the slow and easy pace of life and inspired by the work of the many different artists who have made their home in the region.
The Nerja area
Nerja is perhaps the most beautiful place on the Costa Del Sol. 50 kilometres to the east of Malaga, what was once a sleepy fishing village is now vibrant home to more than 20 thousand people from all parts of the world. Though Nerja has obviously become more cosmopolitan, the town retains its uniquely Spanish character. The white washed houses, the narrow winding streets, the terraces overflowing with geraniums and most importantly the warm welcoming people could only ever be from one place: Andalucia.
At the heart of Nerja is the spectacular Balcón de Europa, a promenade stretching out into the Mediterranean, offering views of the town's numerous coves and beaches plus the magnificent Sierra Almijara. At night it can seem like the whole town is rambling up and down it. The Balcón has a vibrant energy and life that it completely its own. If you don't feel like walking then you can take a horse-drown carriage and tour the town or hop on the 'train' and travel to Nueva Nerja. Be warned; it is very popular with children!
After a day spent lazing on the Burriana beach or one of the smaller coves closer to the town centre, Nerja offers a wide range of restaurants and tapas bars that will satisfy almost every palette. And though the town is usually thought of as a family destination, vibrant nightlife can be found in the Tutti Frutti area.
If you are looking for something slightly more cultured the Casa Cultura on Calle Granada offers a range of events. However, if you are there during the summer, you should try and get to one of the many events held in the Cuevas de Nerja. There is something extraordinary about watching opera or ballet in one of the caves enormous caverns. The International Cave Festival, held there every year, attracts many internationally renowned artists. In any case, the caves are worth a visit for themselves.
Open every day they contain many archeological treasures such as the 20,000 year old paintings.
There is so much to see and do in Nerja and the surrounding areas. Please contact us if you have a specific question about the town. As you may have gathered, we are quite fond of it!

This house has an apartment above it. We had noisy people staying above us. We did not expect people dancing on our ceiling and partying on the balony above us. We would not have booked if we had been made aware of this. |
