Nerja / Maro area
Maro is a hidden gem, a sleepy little village just 5 minutes drive from Nerja town centre. It is completely unspoilt by tourism, a rare find these days. Quaint little streets, whitewashed village houses and balconies overflowing with flowerpots all add to the charm of Maro.
Along the ‘Balcon de Maro’, little cafes and bars will serve you with a glass of vino and tapas - a relaxing place to sit and watch the sun going down over the glistening waters of the Mediterranean.
Away from the crowds, Maro’s beach and turquoise blue waters are without doubt a fabulous place for bathing and snorkeling.
The villagers of Maro certainly know how to enjoy themselves! Amongst the many festivals in the area, San Isidro in May and the Feria in September are a showpiece and definitely not to be missed!
Back in 1959, children playing, discovered the now internationally renowned ‘Caves of Nerja’. With its network of caves, ancient cave paintings and music festivals held within the caves during July and August, it is a ‘must see’ for any visitor.
When you visit Nerja for the very first time, you cannot help but be captivated by this very charismatic resort. Traditional Spanish culture and customs are still part of everyday life in Nerja, something which is rarely found these days on the ‘Costa’s’.
Nerja is situated between the Sierras and the Mediterranean sea, about 45 minutes east of Malaga, with allows easy access from all regional airports and motorways. The town itself has everything you could wish for, beautiful beaches, a superb choice of accommodation, sporting activities, great entertainment and excursion opportunities.
Fiestas in and around the surrounding villages of Nerja are a regular occurrence and are usually colourful extravaganzas. A good way of acquainting yourself with the town is to enjoy a traditional horse and carriage ride through the streets.
In the heart of the old town, amble along the quaint cobbled streets and bustling alleyways abundant with tapas bars and chic restaurants. At dusk, stroll along the Balcon de Europa alongside the Mediterranean and be entertained by the artists and street vendors which add to the ambiance of this stylish resort.

How to get there
The nearest airport to Maro is Malaga, approximately 45 minutes away. Granada airport has recently ‘opened up’ and although approximately 1 ½ hours away, it has none of the queues and stress that you have at the larger airports. Almeria is approximate 2 ¼ hours away (mostly dual carriageway) and is another alternative.
