Nerja is a small coastal resort situated some 50 kilometres from Málaga on the N340 coastal highway, and marks the eastern tip of Málaga´s Costa del Sol. Once a sleepy fishing village, the town now has a population of over 22,000.
Nerja boasts 16 kilometres of beaches with sand and sparkling clear water. All major water sports are available here, including water skiing, scuba diving and sailing.
Flanked by a dramatic mountain range, Sierra Almijara to the east, the town has fortunately managed to avoid being blighted by the concrete high-rise scenario which has been the inevitable result of the tourist boom in some of the coastal resorts. The old quarter of the town is still virtually unchanged with narrow, winding streets, whitewashed houses with wrought iron terraces overflowing with geraniums and bougainvillea.
The heart of Nerja is its spectacular Balcón de Europa, the "Balcony of Europe", a magnificent promenade along the edge of a towering cliff, once the site of the great Moorish castle, with sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the small coves and beaches below, against an awesome backdrop of hazy blue mountains.
There are plenty of restaurants, cafes, and traditional Tapas bars with delicious food and friendly service to choose from, and the visitor can hire a horse-drawn carriage to explore the most romantic corners of the town.
The town's monuments include the 17th century Church of El Salvador, in a style which is a charming mixture of baroque and Moorish, or mudéjar, and the beautiful Gardens of Capistrano Playa, which descend to Burriana Beach.
However, Nerja's most spectacular attraction is undoubtedly its fascinating caves, located just three kilometres from the centre of town. They include archeological treasures such as paintings over 20,000 years old and other pre-historic remains. One of the enormous natural caverns has been transformed into a concert hall, where many performances are staged during the summer. In 2010 Nerja celebrated the 38th International Cave Festival, with the participation of many top international entertainers.
A temperate climate means that Nerja is a great place to visit at any time of year.
The car journey to Nerja from Malaga and its International Airport is approximately 45 minutes.
Playa Burriana beach is the pride of Nerja with its European Blue flag award for safe swimming. It is the largest beach and most famous beach in the area. It is also the most commercial of all Nerja's beaches. There are an abundance of restaurants and bars to choose from serving high quality authentic cuisine throughout the day and evening. A visit to Ayo's is a must to sample the paella that is cooked in the open. Burriana is a wide beach composed of a mixture of fine sand and pebbles, making it easy to walk on.Palm umbrellas and sun-beds can be hired here, there are toilets and showers available and there are plenty of watersports and activities on offer including introductory scuba diving and day cruises along the coast. Along the beach there are a number of play areas for the younger ones. It is a great beach for families and couples.
From Burriana Beach it is only a 10-15 minute walk to the Balcón de Europa, the very centre of Nerja.
Carabeo beach is just below the street, and Nerja's many other beaches are also within easy walking distance. As one of the smaller beaches, it has a lush backdrop of tropical plants, palm trees and shrubs. It is a small, more intimate beach. Carabeo beach is found along the coastal promenade which runs from the Balcón to Playa Burriana. It can be reached from the end of Carabeo Street via a flight of steps.
This beach has to be one of the quaintest beaches you will ever visit. And due to its location, right next to the Balcon de Europa on the eastern side, this beach would have to be the most photographed of all the beaches in Nerja!
La Caletilla Beach
To the western side of Balcon de Europa is La Caletilla Beach (Playa La Caletilla).
If you prefer a fine dining experience for lunch after having spent the morning relaxing on the beach, this beach is for you.
El Salon Beach
The Salon beach is a very pretty bay located to the right of the Balcon de Europa, reached via a windy cobbled walkway, that runs off the Balcon between the hotel and the church. Playa el Salon is one of Nerja's best-kept secret
For a quieter scene try Playa Torrecilla. Located at the bottom of the town centre, Torrecilla has undergone substantial renovation to make the area wider. The result is the sea is much calmer and an ideal beach for young children as the water is very shallow and the sand soft. You can hire sun-beds and umbrellas.
El Playazo Beach
This is Nerja's most rugged beach and probably the least known of all the Nerja beaches but it actually has some of the best and cheapest beach restaurants.
