The Costa del Sol region
Malaga's main draw may be its coast, but its spectacular interior is crammed with interesting attractions, from sleepy pueblos blancos to impressive caves and delightful spa towns. Malaga is also the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, who spent his childhood here. Andalucia's position at the southern edge of Europe gives it a privileged climate. Summers are hot and winters generally mild. Moorish, Oriental and Mediterranean influences, overlaid by Castilian and church domination, are clear in the people's character and customs. Worship of the Virgin reaches ecstatic heights in the hundreds of fiestas that mark the Andalucian year.
Nerja is often referred to as the Jewel of the Costa del Sol and voted by Which? magazine as one of the best resorts in Spain. Once a sleepy fishing village, Nerja has retained its Andalucian character, particularly in the old quarter with its narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed houses. The heart of Nerja is its spectacular Balcon de Europa, a magnificent promenade along the edge of a towering cliff, once the site of the great Moorish castle. From the "Balcon" you can also see the spectacular Alpujarras mountains. Torrecilla is one of Nerja's 7 beaches. It is a beautifully laid out beach with a promenade running along its length, linking El Playazo Beach to the town centre and is scattered wjth many cafes and restaurants along the way. A visit is necessary to the Cuevas de Nerja to see these astonishing underground caverns discovered by 5 boys in 1959. Also necessary is a trip up into the neighbouring hillside village of Frigiliana. Activities available locally include fishing, golf and horseriding.
