Home description

Au-Gaÿ and the surrounding area is a revelation to first time visitors. In many respects, this is forgotten France. Unspoilt, rural, beautiful, quiet and steeped in rustique charm. It is privileged to occupy the top of a hill overlooking spellbinding views of rolling hills of sunflowers, cornfields and vineyards. Set on over seven acres of lawns and private oak woodland and just three kilometres/one mile and a half from the historic and bustling market town of Nérac, Au-Gaÿ gives its guests the enviable quandary whether to while away summer days by the pool or to seek out the hidden delights of the area amongst some of France's prettiest towns and villages.

Whether this is a family fortnight or sharing a few weeks together with friends, Au-Gaÿ epitomises all that is blissful about time together on holiday: sunshine by the pool; al fresco dining under the olive trees; barbecues as the sun goes down; coffee in the square after market day; wine-tasting in the afternoon; fantastic food in the evening. There is even a seriously good kid's fun park within twenty minutes.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Lot et Garonne region

Gascony is a region of unspoiled natural beauty, forming a patchwork of vineyards, plum orchards, corn and sunflower fields, dotted with old stone farmhouses, small châteaux and medieval villages. In the summer, look forward to hot, sunny days and cooler nights, with no mosquitoes! There is much to discover in the region. To the northwest lies the cultural city of Bordeaux, France’s wine capital, which is surrounded by famous wine châteaux of the Médoc and Graves and beautiful towns such as St. Émilion and Fronsac.

Southeast lies the lively and lovely cities of Toulouse and Carcasonne; the former is the capital of the old French area called Occitaine - with a buzzing, beautiful and beguiling ville rose; Carcasonne is a UNESCO Heritage site and Europe's most famous fortified medieval city.

Nerac area

If lazing by the pool is not your thing or makes you guilty for culture, there is plenty in the area to occupy the mind and the appetite. Nérac is a five-minute drive away, where you will find a surprising variety of boulangeries; boucheries; patisseries; cafés; bars and restaurants.
There are also two large supermarchés for the big shop. You will be more than pleasantly surprised to find they sell all kinds of fresh fish, local meats, local vegetables - and wines from the area and from Bordeaux (the former being ridiculously cheap; the latter a comparative bargain).
On Saturdays, the Nérac market is the hub of local gossip, socialising and all things gourmandaise. This market begins in the town square and runs a riot of assorted stalls throughout the upper town. It begins early on Saturday morning and ends at noon - on the dot - and should not be missed at any cost.
Within easy driving distance, there is the Roman hilltop garrison town of Lectoure, famous for the 'bleu' paints and linens, with several fascinating museums, galleries and buildings. The beautifully preserved medieval villages of Fourcès, Larressingle and La Romieu are all close by.

There is always plenty to do in this area: walking or riding bicycles through the gently rolling countryside; renting a boat for the day and exploring the villages along the way; canoing; horse riding; searching for antiques and collectibles in the local flea markets and antique shops; dining out at the many regional restaurants; making friends and dancing the night away at some of the many village fêtes; or just relaxing and enjoying French rural life.
