The Swiss Alps / Valais/Swiss Alps region
The Valais area of Switzerland is justifiably famous for the majestic mountain peaks that dominate the views in all directions and the Rhone Valley that cuts through its centre. The area contains many summer and winter resorts that are famous the world over - Zermatt (nestling beneath the Matterhorn), Saas-Fee, Crans-Montana and Verbier to name but a few. The extensive four valleys ski area starts with the Verbier region in the west and runs to Thyon and Les Collons in the east, ecompassing both Nendaz, Siviez and Veysonnaz along the way. Providing over 400 kms of piste and skiing/boarding for every level of ability, it is a winter sports dream destination.
With over 300 days' sunshine a year, the french-speaking Lower Valais area is famous for its orchards, market gardens and vineyards, as well as numerous picturesque villages and towns. With Lake Geneva in the west and Martigny to Brig (the gateway to Italy) and the world heritage site of the Alestch glacier in the east, the Valais area has something for everyone, all year round.
Nendaz area
Nendaz, at 1300 - 1450 metres high (with peaks rising to 3300m behind it) is a cosy winter sports resort based in a traditional mountain village, on a plateau, in a convenient position with beautiful views, Nendaz shares the same ski area as Verbier - but without the Verbier prices! There are currently 83 lifts and 90 pistes with about 410km of piste. Nendaz has its own ski area which links into the Four Valleys or you can head up to Siviez at the crossroads of the ski domain and explore it from there. It takes just 20 minutes to ski from Verbier back to Siviez at the end of the day. The skiing runs from mid December to late April most years. There are a number of ski schools teaching both skiing and snowboarding, and all have English speaking instructors on hand. Snow shoe excursions, cross country skiing and toboganning are also popular here. There are creche facilites for children during the ski season.
Besides all the winter sports activities you would expect in one of Switzerland's premier ski domains (the Four Valleys), Nendaz is a mountain-bikers' and walkers' paradise, with many kilometres of marked trails from virtually outside the door of the chalet. The area is famous for its bisse walks, rambles alongside the little irrigation channels that wind their way round the mountains, as well as a range of other mountain tracks. The bike routes cover all levels of difficulty and are well signposted in Nendaz and the surrounding area. The area also offers thermal baths and a spa in nearby Ovronnaz, horse riding, golf in Sion (or further afield in Verbier or Crans Montana, both championship courses), boat trips on Lake Geneva (40 minutes away) and sightseeing in Sion (the old medieval town is worth seeing and there's a great Friday market), Martigny (Roman ruins and museums) and further afield. Nendaz is also internationally famous for its annual Alphorn festival, held in late July/early August each year.
There is a full dossier of places to visit and things to do in the chalet along with guidebooks and maps.
There are a range of facilities In the resort: supermarkets, butchers, boutiques, post office, banks, restaurants, bars, disco, sports/itness centre, sauna, massage, plus children's playground, chemists and doctors. In summer there's a delightful open-air pool with views across the Rhone valley and tennis courts. In winter, there's an artificial ice rink for skating and ice hockey. Nearby Siviez has squash courts.
Nendaz has been given a child friendly award by the tourist board for summer and winter activities eg a Robin Hood excursion in the summer months and ski kindergarten in the winter.
How to get there
Nendaz is located in the Valais area of Switzerland, in the Four Valleys skiing region, and is very easy to get to by both private and public transport.
By Air: The nearest airport is in Sion, 20 minutes away. Snowjet will be flying there from Stanstead in the UK every Saturday and Sunday during the ski season. Check out www.snowjet.co.uk. Geneva Airport, with good international links with Europe and the rest of the world is the next nearest airport to the chalet. The airport is well served by both regular (eg Swissair, BA etc) and budget carriers (eg Easyjet) and is 160 kms from Nendaz, about 90 - 120 minutes by car or train, depending on the time of day.
By Train: The nearest train station is at Sion, which lies on the Lausanne - Brig railway line, with frequent services from Geneva and Italy. Sion station has a regular train service direct from Geneva Airport station. From the station, some 15 kms from Nendaz, there is a regular post bus service to the centre of Nendaz or one can catch a taxi for the 20 m inute ride up the mountains.
By bus: There are bus services from Lausanne, 100 kms away or Montreux, 80 kms away as well as from other towns and villages in the area, with connections going through Sion.

To reach Nendaz from the west, take the 'Sion Ouest' exit and follow the signs for Sion and then Nendaz. The road climbing up to Nendaz from the valley is well maintained and cleared in snow, though care should be taken in extremely snowy conditions. There are a number of hairpin bends on the road, but it provides easy access to Nendaz.

Guestbook for Chalet Les Serandes
"Wow, what a view! We had a great time cycling in the 4 Valleys and found some lovely picnic spots. We tried to get to the Aletsch Glacier but it was too early in the summer and there was still too much snow to walk through, so we'll just have to come back another time!" Jenny and David, Northwood, UK
"The skiing was superb and we loved the chalet. We used Siviez as our starting point each day and spent a lot of time going over to Verbier from there. The snow was out of this world - the best we've ever had. It was great to relax after a day exploring the slopes in front of the fire. We really enjoyed ourselves, thanks." Nick, Carolina and party, Barcelona, Spain
"Had a fantastic weekend. The snow was amazing, the sun shone and the wine flowed. What more could one ask?" Sue, Ali, Cait, Fi and Emma, Hertfordshire, UK
"Great walks along the bisses with stunning mountain views and lovely hidden away restaurants. Great golf in Sion and the restaurant there was good too. Had a lovely week in your delightful chalet. Next time we want to visit in the winter!" Margaret & David, Watford, UK
" Sitting out on the balcony on a warm summer's evening first with a barbecue and then watching the lights of Sion twinkling while toasting one's toes over the remnants of the fire as the night cools down - a great way to spend an evening. The kids loved the treasure hunts and the swimming pool. We enjoyed the tour of Old Nendaz." Family Chossis, Fechy, Switzerland
