The South Island region

The Nelson Region is known as "sunny Nelson" as it usually ranks highly as the sunniest place in New Zealand.

It has beautiful beaches and rivers that are perfect for swimming .

There are many pretty walks and hikes ,especially in the stunning Able Tasman National Park. Coastal kayaking trips are also available here. Water taxi's can drop hikers off so that just part of the track can be walked.

Golden Bay is approx: 1 1/2 hrs drive from Richmond over the Takaka hill .Also ,known as 'Marble Mountain' ,this large hill is a popular walking and caving site with stunning views from the top. Golden Bay has many attractions itself.

Kitesurfing , horseriding and other activities are also available.

The 'Great Taste Cycle Trail ' winds past beaches ,villages and over rivers and is a fairly new addition to the attractions.

The region is also well known as an Arts and Crafts destination.

WOW , or World of Wearable Art , began in Nelson and the museum plus the classic car museum is located here.

There are many artists and craftspeople with showrooms on site that are wonderful to visit.

The Saturday Nelson Market is famous for a fantastic range of local food , clothing , jewellery and music .

The Nelson Arts festival is held in October and there is a Summer Festival and a Music festival.

Richmond is a fast growing but small settlement about a 15minute drive from Nelson city . It has shops , supermarkets , cafes etc, and is a great base from which to explore the Nelson/Tasman region .
