Negombo situated by the shores of a lagoon by the same name once has been a trading port for Portuguese and Dutch and is a ideal place for those who want quick access to and from the airport.

Attractions in the city are the old Dutch fort gate built in 1672 now a part of the prison, the Dutch Canal which was then a supply route to the Dutch administration, old churches and fishing villagers.

The 100km long canal running through the town is still being used and is an attraction for those who want to see the country from a different perspective.

The town itself shows its interesting colonial past which was heavily influenced by the Catholic Church

There are many ways to explore Negombo but one of the most recommendable ones is by traveling along the many canals which are connection the Negombo lagoon and the sea.

Negombo

The stretch of road towards Kotchchikade comes to life at dusk (most shops are open at daytime too) with many handicrafts and curio shops, gem shops, restaurants and internet cafés catering for tourists.

On Negombo's long Beach you'll find many seafood restaurants, bars and shops.

"Disappointing, not relaxing"

This holiday was a great disappointment for us. We thought we had booked a quiet villa, for us to relax in peace, with a chef to help us as we wished. In fact it is run like a hotel, and you feel you have rented rooms in catered accommodation. Hence there are constantly staff coming and going who are in the kitchen and office area(which is open to the living room). Hence it is hard to relax and feel the place is your own for your stay. The management refused to speak to me on the phone and stopped replying to emails. Also lots of bites and no mosquito nets, kids suffered. Chef was great though and food excellent.

"Amazing holiday and Fantastic House"

Having read the previous review I am somewhat surprised as our experience was completely different. We shared the house with our friends from Kuwait , which turned out to be the best reunion ever. Having two boys of 6yrs old it was the perfect setting for two families to entertain their children. We spent half the holiday relaxing around the pool, playing on the beach and going out with the fisherman and the other half of the holiday sightseeing with Rohan who was the perfect guide. We managed the elephant orphanage , Kandy and Sigiriya. The staff couldn't be more helpful at the house and we found the locals really friendly. We have already recommended this house to other friends.

"A Dream Holiday"

We stayed in The Cove two years ago and had such a wonderful time that we had to come back. We were delighted to see that it was as we remembered and more. There were many subtle improvements to the house to enhance our comfort. The staff were again extremely helpful and friendly. The food was surperb as before with great variety. Our favourite time of day was in the evening having pre dinner drinks by the pool overlooking the beach and watching the sun go down. It was very romantic and one of the reasons why we returned. We will always go back to Sri Lanka as there is so much to explore and the cove is ideally located with easy access to places of interest.

"Perfect location for Kitesurfing"

A group of us stayed at the cove on a kite surfing holiday. The location was perfect and surroundings beautiful. It was amazing to step out of the house onto the beach and spend the day surfing. The waves were perfect and we were delighted with the convenience. This is a beautiful house in a fantastic location. The food and service were exceptional.

The views from the house are breathtaking, the architecture is amazing. We loved the top floor of the house the best for the pool in particular - so imaginative.

"Great family holiday"

Our first visit to Sri Lanka and we were very happy with our choice of the cove. We did not expect it to be as good as it looked on the internet but it was better in fact. We enjoyed eating when we wanted particularly with the children. The staff were very helpful in catering for the needs of the little ones and we appreciated that very much as it made the holiday very relaxing for us. Having a travel cot all set up for the baby on our arrival was great and saved us the hassle of carrying extra luggage. The pool was spotless and enjoyed by all. The sunsets were amazing.

A contradictory review

The following remarks were written by these guests in the Guests Comments Book at the Cove on 18th March 2012 on departure and a very generous tip was given to the staff.

“Amazing staff!!! Food was the best we've had in Sri Lanka.
Your Staff should be rewarded for such heart felt hard work. Much appreciated.”

A week later this review appeared on the Holiday Lettings Website. Needless to say it is baffling to note the contents. However to avoid any confusion and for the benefit of our future guests future we would state the following:

Breakfast - it is written on our information sheet that usually Breakfast is served from 8.30am onwards. However we will always make an exception when guests request an earlier breakfast. Other meals are served at our guests' convenience. There is no record of these guests requesting an earlier breakfast.

Laundry - we do not have an in house laundry however we provide an outsourced laundry service for our guests.

Towels - our records show these guests used 48 bath and beach towels in 7 days and in addition they have used many face towels and hand towels. Towels are provided in the rooms. There is no restriction on the number of towels we provide on request. All towels are laundered after use. All Towels and bed linen are Egyptian cotton and brought from the UK to ensure quality. Previous guests have remarked on the quality of these.

Check in - Our records show that these guests arrived at 12 noon two hours before the check in time of 2pm. When the booking was made they were aware that guests were checking out on the same day. Instead of asking them to return later the rooms were prepared whilst the guests were there and our records show that they checked in at 1pm an hour earlier than our usual check in time. There was no mention during their stay of any items of the previous guests being left.

Cleaning - The house is cleaned daily. There is three staff dedicated to do this. The house is on the beach and whilst guests can bring ants into the house on their feet from the beach, this is something we are very conscious of and hence the floors are cleaned daily to keep the house in top condition. There was no mention of this or any record of a complaint during their stay.

Hot Water - There is ample hot water at the villa both electrically heated and with solar panels. There is no record of any complaint about hot water during the seven day stay. Each room has a card requesting guests to point out anything that may not be working to the Manager for him to rectify immediately.

Condition of the villa – As stated by these guest in our guest book on departure they ate meals at the villa numerous times during their stay and commented that the meals were the best they had in Sri Lanka. It is hard to believe that they would eat in the villa if they actually believed it was “filthy”.

The Cove was built only two years ago and is skillfully maintained to keep it in top condition. Usually we are complimented by guests on the condition of the property.
There is CCTV on the ground floor and first floor focusing on the entrance and exit doors only for security reasons. There is no intrusion into our guests' privacy.

For the benefit of our potential guests we are happy to provide a guided tour via skype on request.

It should also be noted that six weeks prior to these guests stay a review was left by an English family who stayed in January 2012 which is displayed with photographs. This should be of some guide with regard to the standards maintained at the cove
