About this location
The Istria region
The Istria region
Istria is the westernmost county of the Republic of Croatia and the largest peninsula of the Adriatic
Istria is indeed a feast for the eyes. Its streams flow to the sea through deep valleys and gullies which bring to mind the ancient local myths about giants. Rolling hills overlook the fields and valleys with little towns perched on the peaks, recalling some old paintings. The view is splendid: white-topped mountains, lush wheat fields, plateaux, valleys, vineyards and olive groves on hillsides, and, finally the sea.
As you get to know Istria you will notice more and more enchanting details: church facades and portals, tiny village alleyways with their specific architectural touches, the babble of a stream, the blossoming cherries. Everything is warm–hearted and friendly here: nature, towns and people.
The most famous town in Istria is Pula with his one of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world, the most significant monument in Pula! Arena, the place where gladiators faced lions, used to be able to entertain 25 000 spectators. This grandiose edifice allows you to get an insight of its glorious history, the one you can see, feel, and experience. It also serves as a host to greatest cultural programs.
Labin, a picturesque town situated on a 320 meters high hill and only three kilometers from the seaside, was inhabited already two thousand years B.C. Labin was known as mining town and today, when the mines have been closed down, this town, where all historical sights become true historical gems, presents itself in a new guise. An increasing number of galleries, bars, studios, modern and famous multicultural center as the crossroads of the young generation, have all found their ideal location right here in Labin, which all adds to the tourist offer of Rabac.
Rabac is the major tourist resort on the eastern coast of the Istrian Peninsula, only five kilometers from Labin. Situated in Kvarner Bay, at the foot of towering slopes protecting the town and also ensuring a mild Mediterranean climate, Rabac with a tourist capacity of nearly 10,000 beds can justly claim the title of 'the pearl of Kvarner'.
Wonderful surrounding, lovely pebbly beach, pleasant climate and view of Kvarner Bay all attracted holiday-makers and travel writers as early as the mid-19th century when Rabac was just a small fishing village. Its first hotel, Hotel Quarnero was built in 1889, but in spite of all its advantages at the beginning of the 20th century Rabac could not match the more developed tourist resorts such as Pula and Pore? in the west or Opatija and Lovran in the east. Although the first larger hotel was opened as late as 1925, today Rabac is a developed tourist resort with about 15 hotels and apartment villages and several campsites.
