The Tuscany region

From the Etruscans to the Romans to the Renaissance, Tuscany is possibly the greatest repository of art in the world, from extraordinary paintings and sculpture to frescoes and architectural masterpieces.

Visitors to Tuscany come for many reasons. Many come in search of fine art, others to explore the extraordinary countryside. Gourmets and wine buffs descend on Tuscany to enjoy the simple yet wonderful cuisine and wine. Walkers enjoy the mountain paths, cyclists the rolling hills, summer vacationers the sea coast and islands. Students come to learn the beautiful Italian language and culture.

There is a lot to see and do in Tuscany, the difficulty is really where to start. Certainly most should start with Florence, then continue on to Siena and Pisa. The roll call of città di arte, cities of art, is daunting: Arezzo, Cortona, San Gimignano and Lucca are all striking. The more you come to know the region, the more extraordinary Tuscany appears. Enjoy your visit!

Near Siena / Casole d'Elsa area

FLORENCE: Florence is known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Its works of art and museums are the destination each year of millions of visitors. The Tuscan chief town is a world patrimony of UNESCO, an acknowledgement that highlights its artistic and architectural greatness. It is impossible to describe the charm of Piazza della Signoria , the cathedral, the Old Bridge...You just have to see it.

SIENA : Siena is one of the most important beautiful and visited cities of art in Italy. The city of the Palio is set between the greenery of Val d'Elsa, the hills of Chianti, Amiata mountain and the Crete Senesi . The city is of human dimensions and has maintained intact the charm of medieval town, with its alleys that wind around the heart of the city, the renowned PIAZZA DEL CAMPO. The palio is one of the marvels of Italian tradition.

VOLTERRA: the town in Val di Cecina results from a meeting of different historic periods. Volterra retains a considerable historic centre of Etruscan origin, with its Roman ruins and medieval buildings, the Cathedral and the Palazzo dei priori, which are the nerve centre of the town. The Surrounding area provides the desert "salt works" and the "towers" of the geothermic area of Larderello.

SAN GIMIGNANO: San Gimignano is located on the hills north of Siena and Shines in the heart of Val d'Elsa due to its beauty and charm. The town is a mix of splendid alleys and breathtaking views, where you seem to have gone right back to medieval times. The area surrounding San Gimignano includes charming, flowing hills from where you can admire the picturesque landscape and enjoy quiet walks.

VAL d' ELSA : The area surrounded by more or less hidden gems.
Near the Podere Monti holiday homes you can admire:

- the beauty of Poggibonsi with Cassero, Fonte delle Fate and the Church of San Lucchese
- Colle Val d'Elsa and the charm of the old area
- Monteriggioni and its castle that is unique in Italy
- Certaldo and the ancient village with its funicular railway

How to get there

Getting to Tuscany: BY AIR

Tuscany has two international airports, the Galileo Galilei International Airport in Pisa and Amerigo Vespucci Airport, also known as Peretola, in Florence. Located only 80 km apart, the Pisa airport is the larger of the two airports.... Both airports handle flights to major European cities. Pisa handles the bulk of European scheduled flights so it might be easier to find flights into Pisa.

Direct flights from North America are generally more expensive than stopover routes somewhere else in Europe. More affordable fares can be had if one flies non-stop to a major European city such as London or Paris and then takes a Ryan Air (low-fare European airline) flight direct to Pisa. You'll have to change airports in London and Paris, though, as Ryan Air generally uses secondary airports.

The Pisa airport has direct access to both the Firenze-Pisa-Livorno dual carriageway (Pisa Centro - Aeroporto exit), to the Genova-Rosignano A12 motorway (Pisa Centro exit), to the Firenze-Pisa A11 (through the Pisa Nord linking stretch with the A12) and to road SS1 "Aurelia".

The terminal is also directly connected to Pisa Central Station by direct train service, with many trains to the Pisa central station and with eight trains a day from the Pisa airport to the main Florence train station. The railway terminal is located just outside the departures hall. You can also reach the centre of Pisa with bus or taxi service.

The Florence airport also has direct access to the Firenze-Pisa A11 motorway as well as to the A1 "Autostrada del Sole". The airport is located on the north western edge of Florence; taxis and a bus shuttle connect the airport to Florence's historical centre.

Touring Tuscany with your own means of transportation gives you maximum flexibility.
