The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast/Central Portugal region
The Silver Coast has, until quite recently, been a very well kept secret and has long been a well-loved holiday destination for the Portuguese themselves. They have enjoyed its long sandy beaches, spectacular coastline and fresh fruit, fish and vegetables. The countryside remains much greener throughout the summer than in the south and is ideal for growing vines, fruit trees and a wide variety of vegetables. There is still a strong local sea-faring tradition and many small fishing boats can be seen returning each morning, to the Harbour in Nazare, with their catch of fresh fish. A visit to the daily fish market is an experience!
There are a number of beautiful sandy beaches in this region many of which are located within a short drive of Nazare. Golf is fast becoming an important visitor attraction with a number of very fine courses within easy driving distance of Nazare.
Horse riding, cycling and walking are also among the list of outdoor activities that are available in this lovely region.
The religious centre at Fatima and the historical towns of Royal Obidos and Tomar as well worth a visit as are Sao Martino do Porto, Fos do Arelho and Peniche, all of which are within easy driving distance by car. Toll roads are well maintained and are rarely busy while national roads are generally in fairly good condition and often permit a closer encounter with the local population and the many quaint and quiet rural villages and towns.
Nazare is about one hours drive north of Lisbon airport. The roads are quiet and generally well maintained, The resort is a well-loved holiday destination of the Portuguese and retains its natural charm, folklore and sea-faring traditions. Many of the local women still wear traditional costume comprising of an undisclosed number of petticoats which are worn under a rather short skirt and a colourful, hand-embroidered apron. They can often be seen coming from the morning market carrying their shopping bags of fresh fish and vegetables on top of their heads.
Throughout the year there are many festivals, carnivals and parades as well as bull fights during the summer months in the little bullring a short distance from the apartment. There is a spectacular fireworks display and beach party each New Years Eve and the Easter religious festival is an important event in the local calendar.
Nazare has two fantastic beaches, one just across the promenade from the town and the other, Praia do Norte, is only a few minutes walk from the apartment. It has become famous among surfers for producing some of the worlds biggest waves, especially during the winter months. Brazilian surfer, Carlos Burle is believed to hold the world record for riding a massive wave almost 100 ft high in November 2013, breaking the previous record held by Hawaiian surfer Garrat McNamara since 2011 (78 ft), also at Praia do Norte. The Farol (Fort) stands on a rocky headland above the sea. It is an excellent place from which to take in the views of the beaches, the town of Nazare below and the harbour in the distance. Watch the sun setting into the Atlantic Ocean and then return to the Plaza for your evening meal in O Luis or one of the other lovely little restaurants.
