The Aegean Islands region
Located nearly in the centre of the Cyclades group, Naxos is surrounded by Paros (west), Donoussa (east), Schinoussa and Koufonissia (south) and by Mykonos and Delos (north).
Known for its incredible natural beauty and the rich music tradition, Naxos is a mountainous island with impressive rock formation of great shapes rising from the sea, numerous green plains, fertile and verdant valleys and beautiful, long gold sandy beaches with crystal-clear turquoise waters. Holidays in Naxos are ideal.
The richness and fertility of the land permitted to the inhabitants of the island to be financially independent. This explains why Naxos was one of the last island of the Cyclades to opened its gates to tourism.
This is also the reason, why Naxos is one of the few Cycladic island that has kept its authenticity and an unspoiled natural beauty.
The Naxos area
Naxos castle
Most definitely worth a visit and the steep climb is well worth the effort. The Castle, (Katro) was built by Marco Sanudo in the 13th century. This unique and well-preserved castle has many entrances unfortunately only three have kept their wonderful wooden doors. The huge, thick wall of the castle forms a pentagon and used to have one tower on each corner; nowadays, only one tower is still standing .. (reminiscent of a certain Elton John song…?)
In the centre of the castle, a main square has been constructed which houses a beautiful Catholic church. It might be an idea to check opening times of the church and museum before setting out up the hill.. (yes, I do speak from experience).
There are regular “folk music” evenings at the castle and experiencing real Greek music in such beautiful surroundings is something quite unforgettable!
Old Town
Perhaps the greatest treat of all is just to meander through the beautiful stone streets of the Old Town. The Old Town is located between the port and the castle. There are so many interesting little shops and the Naxians are so friendly and welcoming. They show a true pride in their wonderful island and genuinely want to share it with visitors.
The villages of Naxos:
This is where the true spirit of Naxos comes alive – tucked on hilltops and hidden in valleys are people who live as generations before them have done. Seemingly unaffected by the hustle and bustle of the Ferries at the Port – the villages in Naxos provide a much calmer pace of life.
