Home description

This wonderful masía dating from the 18th century is situated in a peaceful location, surrounded by fields, and half way between the city of Figueres and the medieval village of Besalú.
It is just a few kilometres from the most beautiful spots along the Costa Brava, and only two kilometres away from a well renowned golf and spa resort.

The house was completely rehabilitated in a casual but elegant style some years ago. The result is a perfect balance between modern comforts, traditional details and character.

Mas Sallent is ideal for families and groups of friends, and its proximity to the Torremirona golf resort (2km) makes it perfect for golf lovers too. The spa provides an excellent range of beauty and relaxation treatments for those needing to recharge their energy levels.

The Costa Brava/Catalonia region

CATALONIA
In the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, on the Mediterranean side, and occupying a relatively small area of 32,000 square kilometres, lies Catalonia, one of Spain’s most fascinating and diverse regions.

Geographically and culturally, the beauty of Catalonia is so unique. It has a vast variety of landscapes ranging from rocky coastlines to long flat beaches, from mountains to plains, and from marshlands to forest. It has great cosmopolitan cities such as the amazing Barcelona with its fantastic art nouveau buildings, or the historical Girona and its great old Jewish quarter. It has small medieval mountain villages sitting at the foot of the Pyrenees and elegant coastal resorts in the sandy shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

Catalonia has a distinct regional identity that borrows little form the rest of Spain. Catalans have their own language, and are intensely proud of their unique art, cuisine, folklore and long history. Ask the Catalans themselves and many will tell you that Catalonia is not a region but a nation. Not surprisingly, rivalry between the Catalans and the rest of Spain is an ongoing part of this country’s history.

THE COSTA BRAVA
Sitting just south of the French border, the Costa Brava is perhaps its best-known area. Its rocky, cliff-lined coasts and the small coves they hide, contrasted here and there with some long sandy beaches, have drawn artists, travellers and sun seekers.

Today, although many visitors are drawn here in the high season, there are many areas that are still wild and untamed.
Visitors will find some great natural parks, charming seaside towns (Cadaques, Begur, Calella de Palafrugell), marinas, great golf courses and beautiful medieval villages (Pals, Peratallada).

Further inland stands the medieval city of Girona, rich artistic and cultural heritage; Figueres, associated with the surrealist artist Salvador Dali, and other beautiful towns (Besalu, Peralada) that are open history books with their old stone streets and monuments.

The Coastal Pyrenees are that part of the great mountain range which runs into the Mediterranean sea.
Visitors can try adventure sports, hiking, mountaineering and climbing. The area has an important Romanesque heritage and includes interesting nature reserves, such as the Garrotxa volcanic park.

THE WEATHER
The weather is generally mild, with clear blue skies and brilliant sunshine, but without the extreme heat of the more central and southern areas. Rainfall has been very low in recent years. Spring and autumn are particularly attractive times to visit Mas Sallent if you are looking for an active holiday. In winter the days may be delightfully sunny and warm but the evenings can get very cold. Ideal for a glass of local wine around a blazing log fire.

Navata area

NAVATA
The local village has an couple of bars and restaurants which serve fresh, local food at very reasonable prices.
It is a peaceful, relaxing place but is also within easy reach of the markets, shops and restaurants in Besalú (10km) , Figueres (12 km) and Girona (35km). Beaches are 30 minutes drive away on the Northern Costa Brava.

BESALU
Besalu is possibly one of the most attractive and interesting small towns in Catalunya and is situated just 10 kilometres from Mas Sallent. It was an important place from early times, and when the Moors were expelled from the Iberian Peninsula, it became the capital of one of several independent kingdoms. The town prospered and remained a place of importance well into the 14th century.
Today it is a picturesque little place containing a number of impressive monuments. The most striking reminder
of Besalu’s grandeur is the splendid 11thC Pont Fortificat (fortified bridge) with its two tower gates, over the river
Fluvia. Other interesting buildings are the 11thC monastery church of Sant Pere, the 12thC Casa Cornella, and the Miqwe or purifying baths, a unique building that is a reminder of the Jewish community that lived here in the
Middle Ages.

FIGUERES
The life and work of the extravagant surrealist painter Salvador Dali is focused in the Teatre-Museu in the town of Figueres, where the artist was born in 1904 .
Although his career took him to Madrid, Barcelona, Paris and the USA, he remained true to his roots. In the 1960s and 70s Dali converted the old town theatre (ruined by a fire at the end of the Spanish Civil War) into the bizarre Teatre-Museu. Although it is not a display of Dali’s “greatest hits”, which are scattered far and wide around the world, it is definitely worth a visit. As the artist himself explained, it shouldn’t be considered as a museum, but as a gigantic surrealist object. The very building is an exhibit in itself, as it was designed to be. Topped by a huge metallic dome and decorated with luminous egg shapes, it gets even crazier inside. It’s a place full of surprises, tricks and illusions, containing a large number of his artistic creations.

GIRONA
Girona is northern Catalunya’s largest city, full of historical and cultural interest. Its core is the old town built on
a hill above the river Onyar, bounded by the ancient city wall on one side and the river on the other.
Founded as a Roman fortress on the strategic Via Augusta, the city was fought over countless times even up to
the 19th century. Following the Moorish conquest, it became an Arab town for 200 years, and there was also a
continuous Jewish presence for 600 years. It's no wonder that all these dramas have bequeathed an amazing
mixture of architectural styles, from classic Roman through Moorish and medieval to art nouveau and modernism.
The historic old town has been beautifully restored, and several roads and bridges link it to the new town.
Among its many fascinating visits, all within easy walking distance, are the Cathedral, the Arab Baths, the
Monestir de St. Pere de Galligants and the Museu d’Art. All in all, there are wonderful hours to be spent
exploring its steep streets, and sampling some of its many bars, cafés and tempting boutiques. These are
especially good for clothing, shoes and other leather goods. Handmade chocolate is another local specialty.

CADAQUES
Cadaques is a picturesque coastal village famous round the world thanks to Dali, Picasso and other renowned
artists. You can only access it by a steep winding road, consequently it has not been overrun. With its
whitewashed houses lining the narrow sloping streets and its rocky bays on either side of the harbour (which is
still a working fishing port), it is a genuinely charming little place. Its surrounding area has a special magic too, a
fusion of wind, sea, light and rock.
In the 1950s and 60s Salvador Dali built his house on the outskirts of the village, and he attracted an various
interesting celebrities, such as Walt Disney, the Duke of Windsor and even Mick Jagger, making Cadaques a
distinctly hip place to be. Today the crowd is not so creative nor so famous, but the Cadaques atmosphere
remains.

THE LOCAL GOLF AND SPA RESORT
There is an exclusive golf and spa resort just 2km from the house, designed and looked after to the very last detail.
The golf course has a “Championship course” of 18 holes (par 72), with outstanding ponds, wide greens and breathtaking views.
The spa provides exercise circuits, massages and beauty treatments based on a holistic aproach. Ideal for relaxing and recharging energy levels away from the daily worries and stresses of everyday life.
