About this location
The Surat Thani Province region
Twenty years ago, only a few intrepid backpackers visited the island. Today, Koh Samui is a cosmopolitan melting pot, attracting budget travellers staying for a month or two in simple beachside fan bungalows, to the mega rich, dropping in for a weekend at a luxury resort or villa on the beach.
Koh Samui is unique among Thailand's islands in maintaining a broad appeal for everyone. This helps to give the distinctive relaxed atmosphere that sets it apart. Everyone is welcome.
Nathon is Samui's administrative and business center. ATM's and postal facilities are now available in most other places on the island, but Nathon is the place to go for full banking services and the main Post Office, which also has a telecoms center for overseas calls.
For anyone arriving by boat as a passenger, Nathon is also the island's main port (car ferries dock at Lipa Noi, a few kilometers south) and jumping off point for the islands of Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and mainland Surat Thani. To service the backpacker trade, a small cottage industry of sarong shops, bakeries, second hand bookshops, travel agents and internet cafes have sprung up along the waterfront.
The town's main tourist attraction for day trippers is its old wooden Chinese shop houses that line the middle road, selling an esoteric range of goods, including a lot of gold. Souvenirs bought here will also be considerably cheaper than elsewhere on the island. Food wise, any of the waterfront seafood restaurants are recommended for a taste of truly authentic and very spicy, local cuisine. Hotel accommodation is cheap and plentiful, but as few tourists have any need to stay the night, it's primarily aimed at the local market.
There are several means of transportation during your stay in Koh Samui. There is a service called 'Tuk Tuk' which is basically a fleet of pickup trucks/ motorized rickshaws that drive randomly around the islands 'ring road' and tourist hot spots that you can just flag down and jump in. However, they are not cheap, or too reliable, and only do main road pick-ups and drop-offs.
The main mode of transportation on the island, and most recommended is renting out scooters/motor bikes. If you are a skilled driver, we can assist you in renting out a few during your stay (value cost: $8 - $15/day).
On the other hand, if you are more of a car person, we can help you in renting out an appropriate car instead (value cost: $30 - $45/ day). A heads-up in advance will be highly appreciated in order to make necessary arrangements.
