We are proud to present our period house in the centre of the historic centre of Narbonne called Le Cité. It is newly refurbished with 3 floors and a mezzanine. We have two double bedrooms (each with a double bed), two shower rooms, one with a bath, a second floor lounge and a well equipped dining kitchen.

Explore Narbonne the Roman capital of the Languedoc region, this city is well worth a visit.. The town is accessible by road, rail or plane from England. We have four airports in the close vicinity (Beziers, Carcassone, Perpignan and Montpellier) offering budget flights from London and some provincial airports – none are more than an hour's drive away from Narbonne; Beziers, the nearest, is about 30 minutes. If you want to leave the car behind you can take a direct train from St. Pancras to Narbonne – journey time is less than 10 hours.

Staying at our house you can explore Narbonne on foot. By taking a three minute stroll along the narrow mediaeval streets you will find yourself in the town square with its many cafés and restaurants. The backdrop is the spectacular gothic Archbishop's Palace next to the unfinished cathedral. Take in the wonderful buildings with their classic architecture, see the remnants of the Roman road in the centre of the square whilst locating a bar for coffee, beer or wine from the region. From the square, cross the Pont des Marchands, a thrilling example of one of the rare bridges in Europe enclosed by superb buildings, crossing the Canal de la Robine. Hopefully we have whetted your appetite and yes, there are many more monuments and places to explore plus a marvellous new promenade beside the canal, again with its many bars, cafés and restaurants. Explore Narbonne further on website www.narbonne-tourisme.com

Narbonne Plage, a wonderful stretch of sandy beach on the Mediterranean, is a short 15Km drive away or there is a regular bus service in the summer which last year cost 1.20 Euros each way. Narbonne main railway station is a 10 minute walk from the house and opens up to you all the major towns along the Mediterranean coast, for example you can visit Beziers, Perpignan and Montpellier – or venture across the border to the Costa Brava and Barcelona. You can also catch local trains taking you far into the surrounding Cathar countryside, some of them costing only 1 euro per journey.

Because the house in situated in the old city centre there is limited parking nearby. There are a few free parking spaces and some metred paying spaces although parking is free anywhere between the hours of 7pm and 9 am and on all weekends and holidays. We park in one of the two free car parks beside the canal, a maximum of 10 minutes walk from the house. We think the benefits of being in the city centre and close to all the shops restaurants and bars outweighs the disadvantage of not having parking by the house.

The accommodation is on four floors accessed by a spiral stair case so it is not suitable for young children or people with reduced mobility. We only have two double beds - please don't ask for singles. We have wifi access via SFR, a television with a DVD player and a radio with a CD player.

Damage deposit of £100 required. Prices include cleaning fees. Bed linen and towels are provided.

MINIMUM STAY: 7 days

IMPORTANT PLEASE NOTE: Although we have mobile air conditioning units on both upper floors, following feedback from guests we do not recommend the use of the mezzanine bedroom (top floor) in the hot summer months - between the middle of June and the end of August. - as even with air conditioning it is still very hot. Because of conservation area restrictions the mayor has refused our application to install an external aircon unit.. The main bedroom has its own mobile unit and can therefore be nice and cool even in very hot weather.

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

Narbonne, founded by the Romans in 118 BC was originally an important sea port. It now sits on the edge of a large lagoon home to many water birds and water sports. It is bisected by the Canal de La Robine, an important tributary of the Canal du Midi, which provides a focal point in the town centre, bordered by a new pedestrian plaza with its many cafes and bars. The town reveals evidence of its history at every turn – the magnificent 13th century Archbishop’s Palace, unfinished Cathedral and preserved Roman road in the town square, the remaining Roman building of the Horreum, numerous churches of different periods, the winding streets of the medieval Cité and the Bourg, and the magnificent late 19th century indoor market ‘Les Halles’ which can be enjoyed every day of the week.

A short drive along the edge of the lagoon reveals the ancient villages of Bages and Péyriac de Mer – once on the sea, now providing stunning views of the lagoon – with panoramic rural walks between the villages. You may see the local flamingos and pelicans.

A picturesque 15km drive through La Clape will lead you to the sea. Narbonne plage is family friendly and boasts 5km of beach bordered by a promenade full of shops and cafes. Adjacent is the ancient village of Gruissan with its medieval streets and castle and offering a selection of beaches – the Plage des Chalets favoured for its swimming and other beaches dedicated to water sports.

The massif de la Clape, a protected rocky area offers splendid views of the sea and is home to the many local vineyards which produce some excellent and very reasonably priced wine.

Narbonne

Narbonne is in the Department of Aude which itself forms part of the wider Languedoc-Roussillon region stretching from the Massif Central and along the coast to the Pyrenées. Each part of this region has its own local vineyards with wines to sample. This is also known as Cathar country and boasts many fortified castles, villages towns and abbeys, some perched precariously on top of hills. Nearby Carcassone, renovated in the 19th Century, is now a World Heritage site and offers one of the best examples of a medieval fortified town. Fontfroide abbey, situated in the stunning Corbière valley only a few miles from Narbonne, is considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in the South of France. Béziers, itself an interesting medieval town on the Canal du Midi, is home to its famous flight of eight locks at Fonséranne and the Canal bridge over the River Orb which is one of the biggest in France.

Further afield to the south is the town of Perpignan, the gateway to Spain, with its own Catalan feel, and bordering on numerous small seaside resorts both sides of the border – also with access to the Pyrrenean National Park. On the road to Perpignan is the area’s very own African reserve at Sigean, situated on the edge of the lagoon it hosts many animals in its superb drive-through and walk-through areas – you will need a whole day to see it all.

In the other direction, visit the old port of Sète or Montpellier, the administrative capital of Languedoc-Roussillon with its ancient city centre.

If you want to leave your car behind, Narbonne’s excellent railway will take you directly to all of these major towns, and local trains will carry you further into the countryside. For the more adventurous, Toulouse, Marseille and Barcelona are within easy reach. You can also try taking the yellow train into the Pyrenees – with open cars in the summer it is sure to thrill with its panoramic views
