Home description
The original castle at Ventenac dated back to the twelfth century, when it was captured by Simon de Montfort in the Albigensian crusade against the Cathars. Little or nothing remains of that original building, and although parts of the present Château date back 300 years, most of it was built in the 19th century. In 1938 the Caveau was taken over by the local winegrowers, who formed a cave co-opérative to make and sell wines using grapes from the rich vineyards around the village. The co-operative still makes wine, winning prizes for its rich reds and (unusually for the region) its characterful white

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region
The Languedoc Roussillon region of Southern France curves in an arc from Cevennes down as far as the Pyrenees and the border with Spain. The region hosts magnificent scenery, clean, uncrowded beaches with warm seas, excellent skiing & other recreational facilities, a richly diverse culture and cuisine, quiet roads, ready access, and a climate which boasts the highest annual sunshine average in the country.
The region is a noted, if somewhat underated wine producer, often overshadowed by the more well known Bordeaux to the west and Cote De Rhone to the east. However the wines here can be great and have to be tasted on a visit to the region.
Narbonne area
Ventenac is a delightfully peaceful and friendly village, perfectly located for exploring the Languedoc region. The restored canal-side is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the village itself we have two restaurants offering a wide choice of menus and informal dining, as well as a mobile bakery which is open every morning. In nearby villages there are other restaurants, plus supermarkets, bakers, general stores, tabacs, cafés and bars.
The pure sandy beaches of the Mediterranean Sea are about 30 minutes’ drive away, with a choice of family resorts such as Narbonne Plage and Gruisson, with its unusual chalets supported on stilts. From the house you can see the hills of the Corbières range, with the Pyrenees behind them – about an hour away by car. The famous medieval city of Carcassonne is 35km away, while the Cathar village of Minerve is even closer. Our biggest local city is Narbonne, which was established as a regional capital by the Romans.
During Spring and Autumn periods we offer a range of courses and activity breaks. Our choice of courses is extensive, and we can also organise tailor-made courses for groups. The facilities at Château Ventenac are also suitable for business meetings and seminars.
Guests are accommodated in our stylish bed-and-breakfast rooms, and further accommodation is available within the village. Château-based courses are held in the elegant dining and drawing rooms, as well as in the shaded gardens and terraces.
