The Campania region

Campania is situated in the south of Italy. The region has a population of around 5.8 million people, making it the second-most-populous region of Italy.

Throughout much of its history Campania has been at the center of Western civilization's most significant entities. The area was colonised by Ancient Greeks and was within Magna Græcia, until the Roman Republic began to dominate. During the Roman era the area was highly respected as a place of culture by the emperors, where it balanced Greco-Roman culture.

The area had many duchies and principalities during the Middle Ages, in the hands of the Byzantine Empire and some Lombards. It was under the Normans that the smaller independent states were brought together as part of a sizable European kingdom, known as the Kingdom of Sicily, before the mainland broke away to form the Kingdom of Naples. It was during this period that especially elements of Spanish, French and Aragonese culture touched Campania. Later the area became the central part of the Two Sicilies under the Bourbons, until the Italian unification of 1860 when it became part of the new state Italy.

The capital city of Campania is Naples. Campania is rich in culture, especially in regards to gastronomy, music, architecture, archaeological and ancient sites such as Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum and Velia, in Cilento (2 hours from Naples).

The rich natural sights of Campania make it highly important in the tourism industry, especially along the Amalfi Coast, Mount Vesuvius and the island of Capri.

Naples is the capital of Campania and the third-largest municipality in Italy, after Rome and Milan. The Naples urban area, covering 1,023 km2, has a population of about 3.7 million.

Naples is one of the oldest cities in the world. Bronze Age Greek settlements were established in the region in the 2nd millennium BC, with a larger mainland colony – initially known as Parthenope – developing around the 9th–8th centuries BC, at the end of the Greek Dark Ages. The city was refounded as Neápolis in the 6th century BC and became a lynchpin of Magna Graecia, playing a key role in the merging of Greek culture into Roman society and eventually becoming a cultural centre of the Roman Republic. Naples remained influential after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, serving as the capital city of the Kingdom of Naples between 1282 and 1816. Thereafter, in union with Sicily, it became the capital of the Two Sicilies until the unification of Italy in 1861.

Naples' historic city centre is the largest in Europe, covering 1,700 hectares, and is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Over the course of its long history, Naples has been the capital of duchies, kingdoms, and one Empire, and has consistently been a major cultural centre with a global sphere of influence, particularly during the Renaissance and Enlightenment eras. In the immediate vicinity of Naples are numerous sites of great cultural and historical significance, including the Palace of Caserta and the Roman ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Culinarily, the city is synonymous with pizza, which originated in the city.

Naples is made of many areas, and Materdei is one of the oldest of the city, as it is collocated in the ancient greek part. Situated above the National Museum and Piazza Dante area, Materdei has remained isolated and unknown to tourists until the metro was built in the middle of this little nice and peaceful area! Materdei is a characteristic, popular part of Naples, where tourists can visit and discover the real life of the city! It hosts the most characteristic pizzerias of the city: Starita and Marchese are one of the oldest and most popular pizzerias.
