Key Info
  • Nearest beach 1 km

Our Castel incorporates two recently converted self contained holiday rentals (gîtes), both have magnificent views and are named after the local (Griffon and Egyptian) vultures that often fly overhead. The one referred to here is the smaller Egyptian gite that can be rented with 2 or 1 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (for each of these options refer to the pricing for 5 and 2 guests).

We are situated in the Aveyron department at the south-west corner of the Cévennes National Park just 80 minutes from the Mediterranean. A 30 minute drive down the beautiful Dourbie valley brings you to the historic town of Millau where the crystal clear Dourbie (ideal for fishing) meets the river Tarn that then winds through the town and passes under the world renowned Millau Viaduct. More locally, a 10 minute drive up the Dourbie valley takes you to the 10th century village of Nant equipped with a variety of shops and restaurants. From our rock we have a 360 degrees view looking up and down the Dourbie valley and also up the Trevezel valley. The views from our garden are stunning, especially with the evening light in the valley winding into the distance.

The area is a paradise for people with a variety of interests including walking, bird watching, fly fishing, cycling, paragliding, canoeing, geocaching, butterflies, orchids, the Tarn & Jonte gorges, fantastic scenery, Roquefort cheese, Knights Templar fortified villages...

Another terrace shared between our gites is available for use with access via our garden or bat cave!

Our 800 square metre shared garden with its "mushroom" shaped rock and petanque (boules) court is also available for you to relax in.

Swimming is possible in the river which is a short walk from the gite.

Trout fishing (by any means) is available in the river (permits about 30 Euros).

Being a very small fortified village with no through road, parking is available 100m from our gites at the village entrance.

Help is given on arrival to get your things to the gite.

We provide you with binoculars and a telecope for bird watching.

We also make available a hand held GPS device (SAT-NAV) programmed with the local walks. It can also be used to hunt for one of the 470 local (34 km radius) geocaches.

Further details

We live on site so are available for advice and problem solving.

We also provide lots of things you would normally have to bring with you, such as:

Toilet paper, kitchen towel, cleaning materials, matches etc.

See our Castel de Cantobre website for full details.

The Midi-Pyrenees region

Our gites are situated in the department of Aveyron at the North Eastern corner of the Midi-Pyrenees, the South Western corner of the Cévennes National Park and is in the most southerly 20kms of the Massif Central before you descend into the wine growing region of Languedoc.

This gives it a climate similar to the South of France but generally about 5 degrees lower which makes it much more comfortable (people from Montpellier on the south coast frequently rent our gite to get away from the heat).

Nant

Millau (27kms away at the confluence of Dourbie and the Tarn rivers) is a small vibrant town with enough shops and hyper-markets for most people's needs. Market days are Wednesdays and Fridays while the villages more local to us have markets on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is known for its Viaduct built in 2004, outdoor sports activities and Haute Couture leather industry.

More locally, the village of Nant 6 kms away provides us with butchers, bakers, restaurants, bars, convenience stores, a newsagent, post office, swimming pool in high season and an excellent tourist office.

Places to visit include the historic Knights Templar fortified villages, giant limestone caverns big enough to put cathedrals in and Roquefort for its cheese. For me, the main reason to come here is the beauty of the valleys and gorges cut down into the high limestone plateau (The Causses), the wildlife and the peace and quiet of the unspoiled countryside.

Thank you for your nice comments, we try to give all our clients a holiday to remember. We are lucky to have a property that gives stunning views in all directions with the gîte's private terrace looking one way and a shared terrace looking another while from our garden and high rock, which is easily the biggest in Cantobre occupying about 10% of the village, you can see the views in all directions.
We hope to see you again...
