The Midi-Pyrenees / Aveyron region
In south central France, half way between the mountains of the Massif Central and the shores of the Mediterranean, is the French département of the Aveyron. Little known outside France, this spectacular region is an undiscovered gem for walkers, ramblers and lovers of the great outdoors. The natural landscape of the Aveyron is so extraordinarily rich and the scenery so spectacular, that it takes your breath away.
Wild moorland, vast blue lakes, rolling hills, tumbling rivers and waterfalls, fertile valleys and soft limestone plateaux, sliced through by the most dramatic gorges this side of Arizona. Forests and woodland that shelter deer and wild boar, grasslands strewn with poppies, narcissi and wild orchids, skies where kestrels, eagles and even vultures fly free. And this richly varied landscape is criss-crossed by thousands of way marked walks.
Najac area
5km from Les Trois Puits is the beautifully preserved, fairytale like fortified bastide of Najac. The old town occupies a long and narrow rocky ridge, overlooking a bend in the river Aveyron dominated by an inpregnable castle. The main square was laid out in the middle ages to accommodate large markets and fayres, and lined with two rows of houses. In the oldest part of the town is the 12th to 14th century church Saint Jean, the earliest example of Southern Gothic in the Rouergue. Anyone that visits the area must go to Najac for the incredible views and spectacular walks. Najac is a place you will never forget.
The walking trails are endless, from cool flat riverside walks to challenging steep hill and mountain trails. The Aveyron is a favoured destination for walkers with 700km of footpaths, forming part of the National Grande Randonnee network. A range of local walking maps are available at the house.
How to get there
Getting to the house is easy. Fly from Stansted to Rodez with Ryanair or from Heathrow or Gatwick to Toulouse with BA. The house is 45 minutes drive from Rodez and 1hr 20 minutes from Toulouse. By car travel with Speedferries from Dover to Boulogne or Sea France or Euro Tunnel from Dover to Calais. Crossings vary from 50 minutes to 1hr 30 minutes. We recommend Speedferries for value for money and speed. Boulogne is an 8 hour drive to the house and Calais 8.5 hrs. We can recommend road routes and places to stay on the way. Car hire is plentiful at both airports, including Europcar, Budget Rentacar, Avis and Hertz..

Guestbook
"We thoroughly enjoyed the house - it definitely got five stars from us. We liked the way it had been rennovated, and everything was sparkling clean when we arrived. Highlights included sunbathing on the terrace, reading in the hammock, and sleeping in very late, thanks to a combination of the shutters and remarkably comfortable bed linens. We did a lot of cooking in the kitchen, and found everything we needed. We also enjoyed the area, and would thoroughly recommend that your later guests try a meal at the restaurant below the castle in Najac," JULY 08 - FAITH & DARREN EALES, WALSALL
"Your place was lovely, very peaceful and just what we needed. We thought you had renovated it really nicely and it had everything we needed. We spent a lot of time driving around and visiting the villages which were completely unexpected and gorgeous. All the best for the future." JUNE 08 - KRISTY & GARY OWEN-JARDINE, LONDON
