The region is characterised by wooded hillsides winding rivers and small scale farming. Many towns and villages hold weekly markets and in the summer most have cultural festivals
Medieval town's such as of Villefranche-de-Rouergue, Cordes-sur-Ciel, St Antonin-Noble-Val (where Charlotte Gray was filmed). Albi (with its remarkable cathedral and Toulouse-Lautrec museum), Cahors. The famous Dordogne town of Rocamadour is approximately an hour and half away.
The area is particularly attractive in May and October when the weather can be excellent and there are few tourists.
The Gorges du Tarn is a must-do day trip, with amazing varied scenery and reintroduced vultures! On the way you can see the spectacular new bridge over the Tarn valley at Millau.
The Najac area
Sunday is market day when the main Square is filled with stalls selling everything you might expect and some that you may not.

After many years spending our holidays in France Le Makaire and Najac village is one we will certainly return. The house is furnished and equipped to a very high standard more like a private residence than a holiday let. From the balcony we enjoyed the warmth of the morning sun and the beautiful evening sunset. We even sat back after dark with a bottle of wine and watched the stars and satelites. There are some fantastic local walks as everywhere you look there are beautiful buildings and scenery.Just a short walk from the house are excellent shops to buy local produce for a picnic. Everybody we met in the village was so friendly and helpful. If you like France you will love this house. |

Le Makaire is a real home. It has all the comforts you would have for yourself in your own house but it's on holiday! The house has enormous chartacter - wonderful wooden beams, thick, solid walls, delightful decor, comfy furniture plus a charming fully functioning big kitchen that I enjoyed pottering around in every day. We loved the house; many hours spent sitting out on the balcony listening to cuckoos and woodpeckers during daylight and the hooting of owls after dark. A really beautiful place to sit with a bottle of wine watching as dusk spreads fingers of rose and pink across the sky. A quick nip up to the top of the house in order to take sunset photos of Najac's amazing castle followed by a few beers in one of the local bars - the end of another perfect day. The village itself is an absolute wonderment - dramatically beautiful from just about every part it has a timeless appeal that is impossible to resist. Along with one of the best little patisseries we've ever come across and a handful of restaurants that cover most budgets there's plenty to occupy your palate for a week should you wish not to drive of an evening. Aveyron as an area is magical, nowhere near as touristy as the better know regions surrounding it. There's not even a guidebook written as yet but I would recommend Thirza Vallois "Aveyron, a Bridge to French Arcadia" to get you in the mood. Go soon - this really is a slice of heaven in French France. |
